SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Nursing Director (or designee), the Unit Clerk performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties within the nursing unit. This role supports nursing personnel and medical staff to maintain an efficient and positive care environment.

The Unit Clerk demonstrates proficiency with applicable computer systems and performs additional duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Clerical & Administrative Duties

  • Perform a variety of clerical and administrative functions.
  • Record and type unit council meeting minutes.
  • Conduct safety checks as designated by the department director.
  • Initiate and maintain patient records in accordance with policy.
  • Maintain accurate and current patient census information.
  • Identify patients according to hospital policy.
  • Ensure patient medical records accompany patients to ancillary departments.
  • Oversee timely delivery of specimens to appropriate departments.
  • Perform safety rounds at frequencies determined by the Nursing Director.
  • Ensure medical records and x-rays are copied for transfers to other facilities.
  • Post diet and NPO restrictions, lab work information, and related data.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in current computer systems and unit-specific equipment.

2. Communication

  • Greet patients and visitors courteously and direct them appropriately.
  • Demonstrate professional telephone etiquette.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with staff and departments.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of patient transfers or admissions to the unit.
  • Accurately document information in a clear, concise, and legible manner.
  • Ensure correct spelling of medical terminology.
  • Document patient allergies according to policy.
  • Assist in orienting staff to clerical duties.
  • Escalate questions, concerns, or issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Complete all required unit-specific competencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Strong computer and data entry skills required
  • Clerical experience in a healthcare setting preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to sit for extended periods (3-7 hours)
  • Frequent bending and twisting
  • Standing, walking, squatting, and kneeling are occasional/non-essential
  • Ability to lift 10-35 pounds using proper body mechanics
  • Fine motor skills required, including frequent hand and wrist movements
  • Vision requirements:
    • Near vision: 20/20
    • Distance vision: 20/40
    • Ability to distinguish red, green, and white
    • Moderate depth perception
  • Hearing ability sufficient to detect a whisper at 20 feet

Pay Range:

$21.09-$22.04
