Position Summary

The Digital Communications Director (DCD) will report to the Communications & Marketing Director for the Southern California Division. This position is responsible for leading The Salvation Army Southern California Division's digital communications, storytelling, social media strategy, and mission-focused content initiatives.

The DCD oversees divisional content operations, cross-platform communications planning, influencer and community partnerships, and audience engagement strategies that support organizational awareness, donor engagement, community involvement, and divisional marketing objectives. This role collaborates cross-functionally with divisional leadership, agency partners, Corps, regional teams, and internal departments to develop and execute integrated communications strategies aligned with divisional priorities, brand standards, and campaign objectives.

Essential Functions



  • Lead the planning, development, and execution of monthly content calendars for the Division and Corps, ensuring alignment with campaigns and priorities outlined by agency partners, the internal Marketing Team, and National Headquarters.
  • Oversee the development, coordination, and publishing of digital communications and content across Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other digital platforms to strengthen audience engagement, storytelling, brand awareness, and campaign visibility.
  • Lead social engagement and online community management efforts by monitoring audience activity, identifying engagement opportunities, responding to inquiries, and escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Manage divisional storytelling initiatives through the coordination and collection of written stories, photography, video, and multimedia content that support divisional campaigns, donor communications, media opportunities, and organizational branding efforts.
  • Oversee content capture strategy and storytelling execution for divisional events, campaigns, and community initiatives, including photography, video production, livestream coordination, and b-roll development.
  • Coordinate content and asset support for media partnerships, public relations opportunities, campaign initiatives, and external communications efforts.
  • Develop annual social media performance reports and campaign performance updates for divisional leadership to help evaluate engagement, audience growth, and content strategy.
  • Evaluate emerging digital communications trends, platform developments, audience behaviors, social media technologies, and industry best practices to support innovation, audience growth, and engagement strategy.
  • Lead influencer and community partnership initiatives from strategy and planning through campaign execution, relationship management, content approvals, on-site support, and performance evaluation.
  • Lead communications training, workshops, and educational resources for Corps and regional teams focused on social media best practices, storytelling strategy, campaign support, platform management, and digital communications standards.
  • Serve as the divisional digital communications resource for Corps and regional teams by supporting platform access, communications coordination, storytelling efforts, campaign execution, technical social media issues, and digital engagement initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with influencers, community partners, content creators, and industry professionals to strengthen divisional visibility, storytelling opportunities, campaign promotion, and audience engagement.
  • Manage and organize divisional photo, video, and b-roll assets in Dropbox for use across campaigns, donor communications, media opportunities, and digital platforms.
  • Support organizational brand consistency by ensuring communications materials, digital content, campaigns, and external partnerships align with Salvation Army brand standards, divisional messaging priorities, visual standards, and communication goals.
  • Perform other duties as required.


PAY RATE: $85-$90k/yr.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift to 25 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor of Arts in Communications or related field is preferred.
  • Three or more years of experience in social media marketing for a brand, agency or organization
  • Expert on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Comfortable working with clients and the public to capture and record stories, take photos and shoot video. Content creation expert - including Reels, TikTok videos.
  • Must have great customer service skills for Direct Messaging and responding to users questions online.
  • Excellent copywriting and editing skills.
  • Understand social media KPIs.
  • Comfortable with social listening and analytics tools
  • Have an eye for aesthetic curation and cohesive visual and written storytelling.
  • Knowledgeable in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Premiere and Canva
  • Experience drafting reports and presenting to leadership teams.

  • If working in vicinity of children a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
