Job Summary

The Project Engineer oversees and manages all engineering and administrative functions at the project level, ensuring effective communication and implementation of project information, policies, and procedures across project teams. This role works closely with field operations, design professionals, consultants, owners, and subcontractors to support successful project execution, quality standards, and compliance requirements. Previous experience supporting biotech or pharmaceutical construction projects is strongly preferred.

Locations include Raleigh, NC; Birmingham, AL; Indianapolis, IN; Denver, CO; San Francisco, CA; and Seattle, WA.

Job Responsibilities




  • Develop a thorough understanding of project contract documents, including plans, specifications, and applicable codes.



  • Lead, supervise, and mentor engineering staff while contributing to performance evaluations and professional development.



  • Maintain compliance with safety standards, ethical practices, and company procedures.



  • Facilitate effective communication among project team members and stakeholders.



  • Establish and maintain procedures with design professionals, consultants, owners, and subcontractors related to approvals, reporting, meetings, and payment applications.



  • Collaborate with Preconstruction, Estimating, and Purchasing teams on project budgets, including Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) development.



  • Conduct construction document reviews to evaluate constructability and maintain quality standards.



  • Prepare project studies, material and method recommendations, and cost estimates.



  • Develop contract item lists and trade scope documents for bid packages and material or equipment purchases.



  • Create procurement schedules for subcontractors, major materials, and equipment to support project timelines and buyout activities.



  • Monitor and manage the financial status of projects, including preparation and review of status reports.



  • Schedule, coordinate, and document job meetings, coordination meetings, and owner-architect meetings.



  • Oversee subcontract change order processes, including review, negotiation, approvals, and documentation.



  • Manage project closeout activities, including warranties, guarantees, final payments, and records retention.




Job Requirements




  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field.



  • Minimum of eight years of relevant project engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.



  • Knowledge of accounting principles, cost control, construction estimating, scheduling, purchasing, and engineering principles.



  • Familiarity with building systems and construction processes.



  • Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office; experience with project management and scheduling software preferred.



  • Ability to implement advanced technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Lean construction practices.



  • Strong understanding of drawings, specifications, contract documents, materials, and construction methods.



  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.



  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.



  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced construction environments.




Physical Requirements




  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and navigate active construction sites safely.



  • Ability to use hands for handling tools or controls and perform physical activities including standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.



  • Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.



  • Visual abilities including close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.




Work Experience




  • Experience supporting large-scale commercial construction projects required.



  • Previous biotech or pharmaceutical construction project experience strongly preferred.
