Senior Tech R&D Lab Planner

This is a full-time hybrid position requiring 2-3 days per week in the office.


Summary

Flux Resources is seeking a Senior Tech R&D Lab Planner to join one of our clients' Advanced Technology team. This role is ideal for an experienced laboratory planning professional with a strong background designing complex research and development environments. You will partner with clients developing next-generation technologies supporting artificial intelligence, semiconductor development, robotics, advanced manufacturing, and other mission-critical applications.

Working alongside multidisciplinary design teams, you'll lead laboratory programming, space planning, and technical design efforts from early planning through construction while balancing operational, technical, and workplace requirements. This position offers the opportunity to shape innovative, flexible environments that support cutting-edge research and product development.


Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Planning & Programming

  • Lead programming and planning efforts for complex research and development facilities
  • Develop laboratory planning strategies for new construction and renovation projects
  • Work directly with clients, researchers, laboratory managers, and technical users to define project requirements
  • Develop efficient laboratory layouts that optimize workflow, flexibility, safety, and future growth
  • Create process flows, equipment layouts, and critical space adjacencies to support research operations

Design & Technical Leadership

  • Develop innovative laboratory planning and interior architectural solutions that balance operational, technical, and sustainability goals
  • Coordinate laboratory layouts with architectural, structural, and MEP systems
  • Integrate laboratory environments with workplace and support spaces
  • Produce and review plans, elevations, and technical details using firm standards and QA/QC procedures
  • Provide quality control reviews of laboratory planning documentation throughout project delivery

Project Management

  • Manage laboratory planning efforts from programming through construction administration
  • Coordinate project activities with clients, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary design teams
  • Monitor project scope, schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Support construction administration activities and maintain design intent throughout implementation

Client & Business Development

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships throughout project execution
  • Present planning concepts, design strategies, and technical recommendations to clients and stakeholders
  • Support development of marketing materials and technical content for Advanced Technology and Mission Critical Facilities projects
  • Collaborate with leadership on recruiting and growing technical design teams

Team Leadership

  • Mentor junior architects, planners, and designers interested in laboratory planning
  • Lead mid-sized to large multidisciplinary project teams
  • Foster collaboration across internal teams and external consultants
  • Support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the practice

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture from an accredited program
  • Minimum 10 years of architectural, laboratory planning, or related experience
  • Strong experience planning complex research and development environments
  • Experience working directly with:

    • Scientists
    • Researchers
    • Laboratory managers
    • Facilities teams
    • Technical stakeholders
    • Senior client leadership

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • Laboratory programming
    • Space planning
    • Equipment planning
    • Technical room layouts
    • Laboratory operations
    • Construction documentation

  • Experience coordinating architectural designs with MEP systems and specialized laboratory equipment
  • Strong communication, presentation, and leadership skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while mentoring junior staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Architectural license preferred
  • LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP)
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit
  • Experience designing:

    • Dry laboratories
    • Semiconductor testing facilities
    • Clean rooms
    • Chamber rooms
    • Data hall laboratories
    • Secure facilities (SCIFs)
    • Robotics development spaces
    • Advanced manufacturing environments

  • Experience integrating laboratory and workplace environments
  • Knowledge of sustainable laboratory design principles
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams across global projects
  • Strong understanding of building codes, construction administration, and laboratory best practices

Compensation & Benefits

  • The pay for this W-2 position ranges from approximately $52.88 - $81.73 per hour (converted from the stated annual salary range of $110,000-$170,000, based on a 40-hour work week).
