JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS Penn State is searching for a full time Mechanical and Electrical Technician - Grade 3 to join the team. Duties include:
- Service, maintain, inspect, repair, install and replace electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems associated with commercial and domestic air conditioning, heating, ventilation, humidification, and refrigeration equipment; including air-handling equipment, heat pumps, furnaces, heat exchangers, coils, water chillers, condensation tanks, air dampers, radiators, ducting cooling towers, pumps, etc., including auxiliary components
- Service, maintain, operate, repair, and replace controls and devices to include electric, pneumatic, electronic, thermostatic, pressure, flow switching level controls, etc., to air conditioning, heating, ventilator, humidification and refrigeration equipment
- Use visual checks or computers to monitor and control HVAC systems
- Maintain proper temperatures and water, steam, or air flows and pressure in air conditioning, heating, ventilation, and refrigeration systems
- Maintain logs and records as required, such as D.E.R. requirements necessary to handle refrigerants and ensure proper amounts of gas and cooling agents are maintained
- Maintain, repair, and install electrical circuits such as lighting, power, etc., to distribution panels, generators, motors, electrical boxes, panels, switches, outlets and fixtures, hot water heaters, electrical heating units, and laboratory equipment
- Maintain and repair floor maintenance equipment such as vacuum cleaners, power hand tools, and various other maintenance equipment
- Climb poles or use boom trucks for installation and maintenance of lighting systems
- Test and maintain fire alarm and emergency light systems
- Install conduit, make bends, thread and cut all types of electrical conduits and raceway, such as PVC-MET-rigid and wiremold
- Perform piping and plumbing installations on a wide variety of systems and equipment including, but not limited to, laboratory equipment, restroom fixtures, and all aspects of building plumbing systems
- Install, repair, and maintain all types of plumbing and piping materials and components used on campus, including, but not limited to, glass, dura-iron, PVC, copper, steel, cast iron
- Service, maintain, and repair well treatment and purification systems
- Operate various types of hand and power tools to cut, thread, bend and join pipe
- Lubricate machinery and motors on a prescribed schedule; organize and carry out preventive maintenance program, as directed
- Read and interpret HVAC, electrical, and plumbing schematics, blue prints, drawings, manufacturers' manuals and technical sheets
- Make corrections on drawings, maps, etc., as required
- Plan and layout work in proper sequence, assuring top quality work in all aspects
- Determine material and labor requirements
- Order material from approved vendors
- Safeguard electrical, HVAC, and plumbing services and equipment to protect safety of self and others and to prevent damage to systems and equipment
- Detect unusual conditions or defective materials and report to supervisor
- Perform ordinary carpentry work on buildings such as stairs, floors, woodwork, doors, furniture, etc.
- Replace floor and ceiling tile, window glass and moldings, etc.
- Perform interior and exterior maintenance painting; perform routine roofing repairs
- Answer questions for or direct the work of full-time or part-time employees as required
- Work with customers to obtain specific details regarding jobs to be completed, as appropriate; make minor adjustments of work specifications as required; refer problems to supervisor
- Operate University vehicles, including trucks and snow removal equipment
- Answer emergency calls and perform maintenance program
Job Requirements: Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics, together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas, all varieties of adjustable measuring instruments and the use of broad training in a recognized trade or craft. Equivalent to a complete accredited, indentured apprenticeship or equivalent to high school plus a 2-year technical college education. 2 to 3 years of effective experience. U.S. citizenship required. Work Schedule: 6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Days Off: Saturday, Sunday
