We are seeking a Pharmacy Technician to join our team and support the efficient operation of our Specialty Pharmacy. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring the accurate and timely dispensing of medications, providing excellent customer service, and maintaining a safe and organized pharmacy environment. This role is crucial in delivering high-quality pharmaceutical care to our patients.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides a full range of services for patients cared for by the UCSF Medical Center and its providers and payors. These services include, but are not limited to: drug procurement, storage, and security; safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs; clinical pharmacy services for patients; development of drug use policies within the Medical Center; drug information services for clinicians and patients; and participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs. The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, clinical research, and public and clinical service.

The Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Services share their philosophy of pharmaceutical care. Under Pharmaceutical Services, the Pharmacy Technician II provides pharmaceutical care to patients at Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses and specialized services to researchers on campus. All Pharmacy Technicians are accountable to the supervising or operating pharmacist who is legally responsible by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by Pharmaceutical Services. The Pharmacy Technician II performs all activities related to medication preparation, inventory management, and computer entries of prescriptions.

Operations - Fulfillment

  • Process prescription orders, prepare medications, and dispense orders including prescription intake via computer entries, benefit investigation, insurance billing, co-pay and co-insurance assistance, Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies and Limited Distribution Drug medication responsibilities, and accurately count and label prescriptions for dispensing and/or tracking and shipping.

  • Compound medications using non-sterile or sterile compounding techniques.

  • Ensure prompt bedside delivery of medications to patients and assist with medication delivery for discharge patients.

  • Provide cashier duties and prepare cash deposits for pharmacy transactions.

  • Oversee medication inventory management, including performing cycle counts, conducting appropriate outdates and recalls, and ordering medications from wholesaler as needed.

  • Maintain accurate records for drug inventory and prescription files according to policy and procedures.

  • Perform monthly adherence calls to patients who are enrolled in the pharmacy patient management program.
  • Triage issues from providers and patients via phone calls that do not require the personal attention of a pharmacist and provide prompt and courteous service.
  • Maintain a high level of understanding and utilization of pharmacy programs and software associated with production and medication fulfillment.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to support patient care needs.

  • Facilitate prescription prior authorization requests, obtain and prepare proper forms for providers to complete for insurance authorizations, request information from insurance companies regarding possible alternative therapies, and provide patients with timely communications regarding the status of requests.
  • Perform benefit investigation and financial assistance work needed to ensure patients have access to the medication they need.
  • Obtain and document complete and accurate medication histories from patients.
  • Assist in scheduling comprehensive medication management appointments for pharmacists.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Completion of a recognized/accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program (includes hands-on training period during externship), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Minimum two (2) years experience in a Specialty Pharmacy and/or in a retail/community pharmacy, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
* Pharmacy Technician Certification CPhT

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
* Licensed Pharmacy Technician by the California Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
