Overview

This position is for the Manager of Logistics for Transportation, reporting to the Senior Manager of Logistics. The individual will be the Department Head for Groton Transportation Team, including the Freight Team who manage shipments from Suppliers. This candidate will support fleet management, parts management, fleet maintenance and carrier management. This candidate will manage a rapidly growing in yard team and the daily activities of two General Foreman and six Operations Supervisors as well as a smaller team of Transportation Specialists managing shipments from suppliers using various means and methods. The selected candidate will lead the effort to transport and distribute material as production continues to increase towards steady state delivery of both Virginia and Columbia class submarines. The manager will be responsible for conveyance of all material delivered and/or transported under Groton site cognizance and support the direct Supply Chain effort of expediting material to the shipyard from suppliers. The manager must be highly motivated and have experience leading a large team with great responsibility in ensuring the right product arrives in the right place and supports the effort to increase efficiency with use of provided tools that support tracking and visibility of material. The successful candidate will work closely with the Manager of Logistics - Warehousing to ensure alignment and support of the Logistics Technology Working Group which focuses on business system improvement and technology implementation. Safety is paramount and our number one responsibility given the risk of the evolutions we lead. The candidate will lead the department in ensuring safety requirements, policies and procedures are adhered to and improved upon as deemed necessary.

Position Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include; Oversight of safe operation of tractor trailers and trucks, delivery of material in yard, over the road transportation to various sites, standard shipping of material and hazardous material, maintenance to all department equipment and shipyard equipment and vehicles including preventative maintenance programs, SPMT operation supporting major moves in yard and at offsites, scrap yard operations and management of a fleet of buses supporting department defined bus schedules and tours. Additionally, this candidate will have oversight of the EB Supplier Transportation Team executing supplier shipments via various methods of transportation from air, sea, rail and road.

Area of responsibility include shipyard operations, offsite transport support, movement of people, liaising with property control and supply chain shipping team, facilities master plan team, spatial planning and all operations departments in the shipyard.

In addition to these responsibilities, the selected candidate will need to:

    Lead, motivate and develop transportation team
  • Develop, drive and monitor KPI's on performance
  • Respond to customer and employee matters in a timely manner
  • Have strong networking and relationship building skills
  • Possess financial acumen - maintain a large complex annual overhead budget and develop capital purchasing plan annually
  • Drive operational objectives and evaluate output and performance
  • Partner with Operations Management and Quonset Point counterparts
  • Drive strategy on increasing efficiency while maintaining focus on cost
  • Detailed knowledge of the principles of warehousing, special handling, material segregation, material flow, material traceability, inventory accuracy and material handling and movement
  • Drive process improvement
  • Support in efforts on shipyard decompression
  • Experience with CT and Federal DOT Regulations along with OSHA standards and Requirements


Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 8+ years experience in material, planning, production control and/or logistics
  • Ability to work any shift (1st, 2nd or 3rd)
  • 10+ years in leadership roles with direct reports
  • Applicant must possess or be able to secure secret or higher DOD clearance

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience in Carrier Management
  • Experience in Tactical Fleet/Transportation Management
  • Experience operating a Transportation Management Solution (TMS)
  • Prior leadership experience
  • Knowledge of transporter operations (Scheuerle)
  • Knowledge of shipping operations
  • Knowledge or MRP II
  • Knowledge of Inventory Tracking System (ITS)/Pitch Catch
  • ORACLE knowledge
