Position Summary: The Lead, Mechanical/Dimensional Inspector is responsible for performance of complex mechanical inspection per the technical documentation provided using pre-trained and determined methods to determine product acceptability. The Lead, Mechanical/Dimensional Inspector will participate in continuous improvement efforts through development of enhanced fixturing and inspection methods. This position is generally intended for highly experienced inspection individuals. They serve as an inspection subject matter expert in a team environment, consulting and offering guidance to internal team members. Operating both independently and in a team environment, they will collaborate with production leads, operators, and QC leads on all shifts to ensure effective communication on shift turnover emails. They will consult with other disciplines to resolve issues as they arise. FLSA: Non-exempt Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ability to give direction and effectively train level I & II MDI inspectors
- Collaborate with production leads and CMM programmers to resolve open quality issues such as QC submission failures, discrepancies on CMM reports, control plans, and CMM health checks.
- Review inspection data to assure integrity and investigate/resolve discrepancies found during part inspection. When required, guide MRB team members in resolution of issues, contact the supplier (internal and external), and notify stakeholders (internal and external) of resolution.
- Run complex setups and inspection programs. This includes basic programming, verifying downloads, and communicating results, and training others to use inspection equipment as required.
- Highly proficient in blueprint reading and application of external specifications. Able to fully interpret dimensional tolerances & specifications and comprehensively apply them to components of all levels of complexity.
- In-depth understanding of ASME Y14.5. Able to fully & independently identify complex datum structures and accurately interpret all feature control frames.
- Fluent in setup of complex parts and ability to use all mechanical inspection tools. Able to train other employees in best practice inspection methods.
- Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
- Able to fluently participate in all areas of inspection. Expected to train others and leverage expertise to enhance skill level of fellow team members.
- Is able to operate independently at a high level to identify and complete in a timely manner required tasking as dictated by business unit needs.
- Participate on problem solving teams to perform root cause analysis of internal and external quality failures, particularly related to prevention of receipt & advancement of non-compliant material.
- Participate in 5S workplace organizational activities and maintain work area in accordance with 5S standard.
- Actively & effectively participate in continuous improvement efforts & events as requested.
- Able to maintain equipment and gaging, requesting maintenance and consulting with maintenance representatives as needed.
- Must follow all required Safety and ISO procedures.
- Regular on-site attendance and punctuality is a necessary function of this position.
- May be required to work in other functional areas and/or facilities depending on business needs.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate shifts based on business needs.
- Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Education/Experience & Skills:
- High School diploma or equivalent required, related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Typically requires 7+ years of experience. Previous leadership experience preferred.
- Ability to motivate team members, redirect priorities and assignments, and coach team members on opportunities for improvement.
- Possess a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Highly proficient in blueprint reading and application of external specifications
- In-depth understanding of ASME Y14.5.
- Fluent in setup of complex parts and ability to use all mechanical inspection tools.
- Must be able to clearly, concisely, and accurately convey ideas and information to others, both verbally and in written form.
- Ability to identify roadblocks, and areas of improvement.
Working Conditions:
- Regularly perform repetitive tasks.
- Work is primarily standing (90 + % of the shift) except for lunch and break periods.
- Shifts are 8 hours, 10 hours, and 12 hours.
- The duties of this job normally require exposure to a typical manufacturing environment. Frequent standing, sitting, stooping, squatting, walking, and stair climbing can be expected along with frequent lifting and/or moving of tooling, parts containers, and materials up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel frequently at a minimum of 50% of the shift, as well as undergo repetitive wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder, and ankle motions.
- Must demonstrate proficient fine motor skills, ability to grip, reach, pull, turn, and use tools to torque fixtures in various machinery or in the assembly, machining, or testing of parts.
- Specific vision abilities required may include close vision, distance vision, peripheral and depth perception, and the ability to focus on fine print.
- Must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) where required.
- Must comply with all work exposure EH&S training requirements and adhere to SIG SAUER Inc. security mandates.
