DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health Sciences is a multibillion-dollar organization that comprises three professional schools, the region's only academic health system, and numerous research centers and institutes all working toward fulfilling its tripartite mission. Led by the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, it accounts for a major portion of the University's research and philanthropic portfolios and supports an expanding clinical footprint across the San Diego region. With more than 1,900 faculty and 20,000 staff, UC San Diego Health Sciences is home to nationally recognized academic and clinical programs and is widely recognized as one of the premier biomedical research institutions in the world.

As part of the UC San Diego Health Sciences Communications Team, the Visual Media Producer serves as the lead photographer and videographer for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and supports visual media initiatives across health sciences schools, institutes and centers. This position plays a key role in supporting the university's brand through compelling visual storytelling aligned with established messaging and communications strategy.

The Visual Media Producer brings a strong creative perspective to projects, proactively identifying opportunities to elevate storytelling through photography and video. In addition to producing high-quality multimedia content, the role serves as a trusted visual resource and advisor to communications colleagues and leadership - recommending imagery, advising on visual direction, and helping identify photo collections and assets that best support communications goals across web, social media, publications and other platforms.

This position also oversees the development and maintenance of the Health Sciences media gallery, ensuring that images and video are well organized, easily searchable and readily available to support communications needs across a large and complex organization.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree in photography, visual communications, media production, or a related field plus three (3) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively direct technical staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications.

  • Knowledge of the organization, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.

  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.

  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills. Strong communication and organizational skills, including the ability to coordinate projects, manage schedules and collaborate effectively across large and complex organizations.

  • Knowledge of location protocols and channels for communication internally and externally.

  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Demonstrated professional portfolio showing depth and breadth of photography and video production capabilities.

  • Experience planning and executing multimedia projects from concept through final delivery.

  • Technical proficiency with photography and video production equipment, lighting techniques and editing workflows.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop and Premiere Pro.

  • Experience managing digital assets, photo libraries, or digital asset management systems, including the ability to organize, manage, and deliver multimedia assets accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Knowledge of digital publishing requirements including image optimization, color correction and formatting for web and social platforms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic communications plans.

  • Experience working within higher education, academic medicine, health care or research environments. Background or familiarity with scientific environments, campus settings, laboratory settings or biomedical research.

  • Experience working with senior leaders, faculty and other high-profile subjects, with the ability to put subjects at ease and capture authentic imagery.

  • Strong understanding of visual storytelling and emerging multimedia trends across digital platforms. Confidence in proposing creative ideas and contributing to strategic conversations around visual storytelling.

  • Experience producing multimedia content that highlights teaching, scientific discovery, clinical innovation or research impact. Curiosity about science and research and experience translating complex discoveries into engaging visual stories.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $79,200 - $143,400 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $37.93 - $68.68

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
