We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Sr. Director Thought Leadership (Hybrid) on our Enterprise Communication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This role is responsible for shaping and
aligning the AMA's narrative with the organization's brand, values, and
strategic vision. This role steers integrated communication strategies that
engage employees, advance the AMA's influence with external stakeholders, and
elevates organizational leaders as prominent voices on national health care
issues. Overseeing both the team responsible for leadership visibility
externally and the employee communications teams, this role ensures messaging
consistency to produce impact in thought leadership and that resonates with
employees. This role is central to positioning AMA and its executives as
thought leaders, driving enterprise-wide engagement, and raising the visibility
of AMA's expertise, influence, and point of view in national health care
conversations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Thought Leadership
  • Responsible for the management of AMA's thought leadership strategy, ensuring executive and employee communications fully align with the brand, core values, and strategic objectives.
  • Drive reputation, engagement, and influence with internal teams and national audiences through integrated, and varied communications methods that highlight AMA's mission and leadership in health care.
  • Partner with executive leadership to craft and amplify impactful, authentic narratives and executive presence that reinforce AMA's leadership in health care discussions, fuel a narrative of innovation, and consistently elevate the AMA as the go-to voice in health care, digital health, and advocacy.
  • Identify, pursue, and secure high-profile national platforms, partnerships, appearances, and sponsorships to position AMA and its leaders as trusted voices in health care.

Executive and Employee Communications

  • Foster collaboration and synergy between key external- and internal-facing communications teams.
  • Oversee and set strategic direction for the development of executive speeches, op-eds, letters, and presentations, ensuring all communications are compelling, timely, and drive AMA's organizational goals.
  • Lead major enterprise-wide events and programs, such as all-employee meetings, town halls, marquee speaking engagements, and leadership development initiatives, managing outside vendors and agencies as necessary.
  • Establish and uphold high standards for AMA communications by continually improving effectiveness and impact.
  • Measure, assess, and refine thought leadership and communication initiatives for ongoing improvement.

Communications & Training

  • Develop and deliver targeted training for senior leadership and the board to strengthen executive presence and thought leadership.
  • Advise and prepare AMA spokespersons for public engagements, working in close collaboration with AMA Media Relations to ensure clear, consistent, and effective responses to news and current events.
  • Partner with spokespersons and leaders to craft and deliver compelling messages that advance AMA's initiatives and health care priorities.

Staff
Management

  • Lead, mentor, and provide management oversight for staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor's degree required.
  2. Minimum 12+ years of experience in strategic communications, thought leadership, and executive messaging.
  3. 7+ years of experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent.
  4. Proven ability to develop and execute thought leadership strategies, with demonstrated success managing large, complex, multi-stakeholder initiatives.
  5. Proven ability to work well under deadline pressure and meet deadlines while keeping both long- and short-term organizational goals in clear sight.
  6. Detail-oriented with excellent writing and editing skills; ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders to generate compelling content.
  7. Excellent strategic thinking and planning skills required; able to build and implement roadmaps.
  8. Polished interpersonal, presentation, oral communication, and consultative skills required.
  9. Some travel required.

The American Medical Association is located at 330 N. Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 and is convenient to all public transportation in Chicago.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $191,434-$258,539. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
