Job Description

The Electron Microscopy Core (EMC) at the University of Missouri is seeking a Research Specialist Senior to support and advance its capabilities in both materials and biological sciences. This role focuses on enabling high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and volume electron microscopy studies across a wide range of samples, including metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, and biological specimens such as tissues, cells, and purified proteins. The successful candidate is expected to have graduate level training with previous projects experience in a research lab setup. Understanding the scientific need from users is essential for this position. Frequent literature reading is required.

* Perform sample screening and imaging using the JEM1400 TEM.
* Acquire and analyze imaging data using the Quanta600 platform, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS).
* Assist with advanced sample preparation techniques using the Aquilos2 FIB-SEM system, including cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-FIB) milling and lift-out procedures.
* Perform routine instrument benchmarking and quality control on high-end systems such as the Titan Krios and Spectra300.
* Optimize and develop experimental protocols, contributing to methodological advancements in volume electron microscopy (vEM), correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM), FIB-SEM, and STEM.
* Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and project workflows using an electronic laboratory notebook.
* Communicate effectively with users to understand experimental needs and provide updates on progress and results.
* Provide user training, consultation on project design and submission, and support in data interpretation and analysis.
