Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

We are looking for an experienced and practical Field Trainer, Safety, who can deliver safety training, create informative content, and manage certification and compliance programs for our team. This position is well suited for someone with expertise in heavy civil earthwork safety, equipment risks, and relevant regulations, and who is dedicated to protecting people while promoting a strong safety culture onsite.

The Field Trainer will travel to job sites and offices to deliver safety training, observe field operations, and partner with operations and safety leadership to ensure employees have the knowledge, skills, and certifications needed to perform work safely and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. This role partners closely with Safety, Operations, and Workforce Development to ensure employees have the knowledge, skills, and certifications needed to work safely and confidently in the field. The Field Trainer focuses on training and coaching (not enforcement) and plays a key role in building a strong, consistent safety culture across all jobsites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety Training & Field Coaching

  • Deliver hands-on safety training to field employees, forepersons, and supervisors at active heavy civil jobsites.
  • Conduct new hire onboarding, refresher training, and targeted safety sessions based on jobsite risk and field needs.
  • Observe field operations and provide real-time coaching and feedback to reinforce safe work practices.

Training Program Development

  • Develop, update, and maintain safety training materials, SOPs, job aids, and visual tools for field use.
  • Customize training content to align with specific scopes of work, equipment, and jobsite conditions.
  • Support train-the-trainer efforts by equipping field leaders to reinforce safety expectations onsite.

Compliance & Certification Support

  • Partner with Safety leadership to ensure training aligns with OSHA and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with tracking safety-related training, certifications, and qualifications to support compliance and visibility.
  • Support audits, inspections, and incident follow-up by identifying training gaps and recommended actions.

Partnership & Safety Culture

  • Collaborate with project teams, superintendents, and safety leaders to proactively address jobsite risks.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through consistent messaging, accountability, and peer-to-peer engagement.
  • Participate in safety initiatives, committees, and company-wide training events.

Continuous Improvement

  • Gather feedback from the field to assess training effectiveness and recommend improvements.
  • Stay current on industry best practices, equipment risks, and safety trends in heavy civil construction.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • 5+ years of experience in heavy civil construction, with a strong emphasis on field safety, operations, or supervision.
  • Demonstrated safety leadership experience, such as serving as a safety lead, foreman, superintendent, safety coordinator, or trainer
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations applicable to heavy civil construction (excavation, trenching, equipment, fall protection, etc.)
  • Ability to train adult learners, including delivering hands-on, field-based instruction
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to coach, influence, and build credibility with field crews and leadership
  • Strong observation and coaching skills, with the ability to identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and address them constructively
  • Basic computer skills, including use of learning systems, training records, and Microsoft tools (Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to various job sites and office locations.

OTHER:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's licence.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and background checks. This is a safety-sensitive role.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing job duties, the employee frequently communicates with coworkers and clients and must exchange accurate information. Additional responsibilities include: standing or sitting in a stationary position for long periods, more than 50% of the time; using a computer or laptop in an office setting with natural or fluorescent lighting; moving between floors in an office building; regularly attending off-site meetings or events; and lifting to 50 lbs. unassisted. Employees must also be able to navigate active construction sites and operate or demonstrate heavy equipment safely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those employees may encounter while performing their essential job functions. Most often, this involves an office setting; however, frequent travel to job sites is required. Employees frequently work alone and with others. They will occasionally encounter high noise levels when visiting job sites, but hearing protection is provided and required. Most work is conducted in a standard office environment. Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and hearing or respiratory protection, will be provided and must be worn as required.

Base Compensation: $86,000 - $112,500

The base salary range may vary depending on geographic location, applicant skills, and prior relevant experience.
