Job Description Summary:
The Research Scientist is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations and implementation of multiple research projects within an active and growing research lab at The Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University. This position requires a highly organized and detail-oriented individual with excellent project management, leadership, and communication skills. The Research Scientist will collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator and research team to ensure the successful execution of various studies, from securing ethical approvals and developing protocols to supervising staff, managing timelines, and coordinating manuscript writing and grant proposal development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Project Planning and Implementation:

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, timelines, and budgets for multiple concurrent research studies, ensuring adherence to project objectives, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Oversee the development and submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, clinical trial registrations, and other regulatory documents required for study initiation and conduct.
  • Collaborate with the research team to design and implement study protocols, data collection procedures, and quality control measures.
  • Coordinate and facilitate project meetings, ensuring effective communication and collaboration among team members.
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks and issues, developing contingency plans and implementing corrective actions as necessary.


Team Management and Supervision:

  • Recruit, train, and supervise research staff, including study coordinators, data managers, and other support personnel.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and foster professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment, fostering effective communication and teamwork.
  • Ensure adherence to institutional policies, regulatory requirements, and best practices in research conduct.

Data Management and Reporting:

  • Oversee data management processes, including data collection, entry, cleaning, and quality assurance.
  • Develop and maintain data tracking systems and documentation for study progress, milestones, and outcomes.
  • Prepare regular progress reports and presentations for Principal Investigators, collaborators, and funding agencies.
  • Coordinate the dissemination of research findings through publications, conference presentations, and other scholarly activities.

Grant Management and Development:

  • Assist in the preparation and submission of grant proposals and progress reports for existing and future research projects.
  • Collaborate with Principal Investigators to identify funding opportunities and develop competitive grant applications.
  • Manage awarded grant budgets, expenditures, and reporting requirements in accordance with sponsor guidelines.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Master's degree plus 5 years of experience or a PhD plus 2 years of experience in a related discipline to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

  • Master's degree or higher in a relevant field such as Public Health, Biomedical Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in project management, preferably in an academic or research setting.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex, multi-component research projects from initiation to completion.
  • Experience with clinical trials, protocol development, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with grant writing, budgeting, and research administration.

Hiring Range $68,712.00 - $109,821.76
