Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Post Doctoral Research Associate

Brookhaven National Laboratory
$71,900.00 - $88,000.00 / yr
United States, New York, Upton
20 Brookhaven Ave (Show on map)
Apr 03, 2026

The Soft Inelastic X-ray Scattering (SIX) Beamline of National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) provides world-class capabilities for Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS), offering ultra-high energy resolution in the soft X-ray range (200 eV - 2000 eV), full momentum-control and novel opportunities for the sample-environment. The main goal of the SIX Beamline, which has been open to users since 2019, is to investigate the complex physics of quantum materials. The SIX Beamline Team focuses on the study of magnetic and electronic excitations in novel materials and unconventional superconductors, devices under-operation, laser-pumped metastable states.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The selected candidate will be part of the group of Dr. Valentina Bisogni, focusing on the electronic investigation of novel van der Waals (vdW) materials and two-dimensional (2D) Moire materials and devices, etc... The candidate will primarily use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering for these studies, taking advantage of the state-of-the-art RIXS Beamline at NSLSII: the SIX 02-ID Beamline. The candidate will also have the opportunity to use various facilities available at BNL (e.g. CFN) for sample preparation and characterization. Additionally, as a member of the Electronic Structure Techniques (EST) group, the candidate is welcome to collaborate with other members of the group as well as to utilize complementary research opportunities at other beamlines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Carry out independent scientific research on novel van der Waals (vdW) materials and two-dimensional (2D) Moire materials and devices, utilizing the unique capabilities of SIX beamline.

* Contribute to development and testing of the experimental setup that enables device functionalities during RIXS experiments through the application of perturbations like electric field, magnetic field, etc...
* Collaborate with team members and users in order to achieve high-impact research works.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* PhD. in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related discipline and 1 year of experience using the SIX Beamline at NSLSII.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work both independently and as a part of a multi-institutional team.
* Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists, technical staff, and users.
* A good understanding of the physics of quantum materials.
* Demonstrated data analysis skills.
* Proven ability to disseminate research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Experience in synchrotron-based soft X-ray techniques, ultra-high vacuum instrumentation, X-ray optics, and/or X-ray detectors.
* Experience in X-ray absorption (XAS) and scattering techniques, such as x-ray scattering, neutron scattering, photoelectron spectroscopy, etc.
* Experience with lab-standard sample characterization techniques and related equipment (transport measurements, single crystal diffraction, optical spectroscopy, etc...), electrode/material deposition and device testing techniques, and/or laser operation and laser pumping experiments.
* Good programming skills in Python or similar languages.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

The candidate should be capable of communicating with coworkers and users, should be conscious of changing surroundings at beamlines, and capable of working at the presence of static magnetic fields.

BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $71,900.00 - $88,000.00 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to employee success and we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Review more information at BNL | Benefits Program
