The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent and 2 years of professional experience

MS degree in medical illustration.
Position Summary
This is specialized artistic, scientific, and technical work that involves the preparation of anatomical, pathological, and surgical illustrations, 3-D models and animations, and other media used in biomedical communications. This work involves considerable knowledge of science and the use of specialized software to plan, design, organize, and produce a wide range of educational materials. The production of these materials involves excellent artistic skills and knowledge of graphic presentation techniques. The person in this position interacts on a routine basis with faculty members to develop illustrations, animations, interactive teaching materials, and 3-D models. Work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Educational Resources and functions with considerable independence on technical assignments. Work is reviewed through periodic conferences and the observation of results.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Extensive knowledge of artistic media applicable to the representation of scientific subjects
  • Proficiency in current technologies and specialized software used to create illustrations, 3-D models, animations, and present these to scientific audiences, such as Cinema 4D, Maya, Unity, Unreal, ZBrush, Photoshop, and After Effects.
  • Considerable knowledge of anatomy, pathology, surgery, and the major branches of medical sciences.
  • Proven effective communication skills, including the ability to facilitate problem resolution, develop workable solutions, and promote excellent customer service. Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Has the training needed to develop virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D models for use in innovative teaching activities.

  • Normal office environment.
  • Lift and carry up to 20 pounds, both assisted and unassisted.
  • Fine finger dexterity to design and build models and exhibits.
  • Utilize computer technology for all applications in a manner that meets performance expectations.

  • Works effectively with faculty and staff in the preparation of illustrations, 3D models, animations, and diagrams for publication in professional journals, large format posters, brochures, and for use in lectures and demonstrations, ensuring projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in specialized knowledge and utilizes strong innovative skills in the creation of medical illustrations, 3-D models, animations, and interactive elements depicting anatomical structures, scientific procedures, and pathological lesions.
  • Selects and incorporates the most effective artistic techniques to ensure a thorough understanding of the topic/data by the target audience.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Remains up-to-date and proficient in new technologies, recommends technologies, and proposes innovative solutions to meet customers' needs.
  • Attends emerging technology conferences (e.g., Association of Medical Illustrators conference) to coordinate with members of the Educational Resources team on the use of new strategic initiatives to increase student engagement and immersion in veterinary and medical subjects.
  • Researches new technology (including virtual reality headsets, interactive educational materials, computer programs, etc.) and participates in initiatives designed to include new technologies in the work of Educational Resources.

  • Autonomously researches, analyses, and selects the most effective technologies to address unique and complicated educational challenges. These include incorporating software development strategies into creation of new educational materials for use in the curriculum.

  • Ensures appropriate project prioritization to ensure work production is timely and accurate.

  • Creates logos that provide an effective visual representation of the products, ensuring accuracy of work and attention to detail.
  • Translates technical data into effective designs for charts and graphs.
  • Designs and builds exhibits and other visual displays that are efficient to put together and cost-effective.
  • Performs other tasks within the purpose and scope of the position.
