GENERAL SUMMARY:

Functions as the focal communicator and resource person by interacting with the OR staff, physicians, and other hospital department personnel in a customer friendly way. Responsible for the timely, accurate and clear transfer of communications. Develops and maintains a harmonious, customer friendly environment. Assists in coordinating the operative schedule by tracking/ sending for patients, paging physicians, keeping staff informed of the schedule progress and other duties as assigned. Is competent in phone, paging, intercom system, and computer systems. Performs clerical duties as assigned such as operative record organization pre and post procedure, chart processing with addressograph stamping, special study logs, maintenance of adequate administrative supplies, completion of operative performance improvement reports, and procurement and review of medical records and x-rays of the main hospital. Meets the unique demands of a fast paced, competitive outpatient surgery environment. Consistently focused, as part of the Ambulatory Surgical Team on reaching quality outcomes in an economically viable and customer friendly way.

The Perioperative Support Specialist is responsible for scheduling surgical, endoscopic, and operative obstetrical procedures, maintaining Perioperative Services statistical data, and providing required management reports. She/He is also responsible for distributing required patient information in a confidential manner, scheduling the requested tests as required, and communicating with clinical and support departments as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Skills Required:
1. High school graduate or GED.
2. Requires excellent communication skills including skills in voice control/tone, body language, manners, attitude, accuracy and listening.
3. Ability to work independently under stressful conditions while handling continuous interruption.
4. Requires excellent clerical and computer skills.
5. Ability to prioritize, perform, and complete multiple job responsibilities in a timely manner.
6. Meets the requirements of preemployment screening and physical.
7. Customer service training preferred. Requires excellent customer service skills.
8. Prior 12 months services; perioperative experience will be considered first.
9. Prior clerical training/knowledge and/or two years experience in a health care setting required.
10. Ability to make appropriate decisions with a minimum amount of supervisory direction.
11. Experience with EPIC scheduling required.
12. Must be able to maintain patient confidentiality.
13. Successful completion of medical coding and medical terminology courses required.

As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
