Essential Job Duties

As a Mail Clerk I, you will play a vital role in keeping the university connected. Every day, you'll ensure that thousands of pieces of mail and packages move accurately, securely, and on time-supporting students, faculty, researchers, and staff across campus.

Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Receive, sort, and distribute incoming mail and packages following established procedures.
  • Prepare outgoing mail, including weighing, metering, labeling, and bundling for USPS and courier pickup.

  • Perform campus mail deliveries and pickups using carts or departmental vehicles.
  • Assist with basic metered mail operations and identify appropriate mail classes and services.

  • Maintain accurate logs, delivery records, and related documentation.
  • Follow postal regulations, safety guidelines, and departmental policies.

  • Provide courteous customer service and respond to routine mailrelated inquiries.
  • Identify and report damaged, misdirected, or suspicious mail in accordance with established protocols.

  • Support special projects, bulk mailings, and seasonal workload increases as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, colleagues, and campus customers.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions related to work assignments.
  • Lift, carry, and maneuver materials weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Other Responsibilities
  • Duties may change or be assigned as operational needs evolve.
Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in mail services, logistics, warehouse, or delivery operations
  • Familiarity with USPS classes of mail and basic metering equipment
  • Customer service experience in a campus or business environment

Required License or Certification

  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
