POSITION SPECIFICS

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Molecular and Precision Medicine / Medicine, seeks a Senior Scientific Editor to support the department's growing research enterprise. This position will provide high-level editorial and strategic writing support for peer-reviewed manuscripts, NIH and other extramural grant applications (including training grants such as T32), and departmental research communications. The successful candidate will ensure scientific clarity, consistency, formatting compliance, and alignment with sponsor requirements while enhancing the overall impact of research submissions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, edit, and rewrite scientific manuscripts and grant applications (e.g., R01, R21, K awards, T32, and other federal/foundation proposals)
  • Ensure adherence to NIH and sponsor formatting, compliance, and submission guidelines
  • Assist in assembling training grant tables and supporting documentation for institutional applications
  • Coordinate multi-investigator proposal materials and manage document version control
  • Develop and edit content for the departmental newsletter
  • Manage department-specific research communications and social media content
  • Provide editorial consultation to faculty and trainees to strengthen narrative clarity and competitiveness

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in biomedical sciences or related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience editing scientific manuscripts and extramural grant applications
  • Strong knowledge of NIH grant structure and review criteria
  • Exceptional written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a collaborative academic environment
  • Experience supporting institutional training grants (e.g., T32)
  • Familiarity with NIH submission systems (eRA Commons, ASSIST)
  • Prior experience in academic communications or research development

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $61,800.00 - $89,600.00.
