Job Summary

Under supervision of an Animal Resources Supervisor, perform routine cage changes and wash/sterilize animal cages and racks according to Federal AAALAC-NIH guidelines; perform repair and maintenance tasks to animal rooms and cages, caging systems and equipment, and perform general grounds maintenance. Provide mechanical support for animal housing designs for research experiments, assemble, build/fabricate animal structures, devices, caging systems for the outdoor colony. Perform routine scheduled preventative maintenance on animal structures and caging systems. Perform animal care technical duties such as performing routine animal care tasks, technical and experimental assistance (observing animals for abnormal behavior, feed animals, clean animal rooms, provide enrichment, and transport animals to locations on site, to the airport and/or campus locations). Work with animals that are infected with the HIV/SIV virus.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certifications or equivalent experience.
  • No minimum education required
  • Experience as an animal technician performing routine husbandry and care duties; Experience to perform data entry to enter and record data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice guidelines; Experience in administering IM injections and performing venipuncture and sample collection of non-human primates; Experience in recognizing changes in animal physical appearance or behavior; Basic training and experience in plumbing, soldering, welding, building (assembly/fabrication techniques), such as wood frame construction, electrical and concrete construction.
  • Skills to operate forklift and to operate an automated cage washer. Knowledge of standard shop practices and techniques to build, assemble, install and/or repair caging systems/structures and devices. Skills to set up and operate standard machine tools; Ability to use independent judgment to repair cages and construct or modify animal care aids. Mechanical skills and knowledge to repair a large variety of mechanical equipment, pumps, pneumatic components, and vacuum systems; Knowledge of shop and machine tool safety procedures. Knowledge of basic welding, brazing, and soldering procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligible to obtain certification to be certified as a laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within one year from date of hire.
  • Experience in specialty area such as nonhuman primate facilities, barrier, hazard containment and animal facility. Experience in driving a forklift and/or the ability to become certified to drive and operate a forklift. Experience in working from diagrams, design drawings, rough sketches, and verbal instructions. Experience working with animals infected with the HIV/SIV virus and perform duties in Biosafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 conditions where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV or Herpes B virus.
  • Knowledge of NIH,OLAW,USDA regulations and AALAS practices and Protocols pertaining to primate non-human animal models. Effective communications skills (written and oral) to convey complex technical issues to Colony Management and academic research professional that include skills to enter and record data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice guidelines. Knowledge to safely operate a variety of shop and hand tools including table saw, chop saw, band saw, grinder, lathe, drill press, drill, file hammer, pliers, screwdriver, etc.

Work Environment

Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings. Work overtime, occasional weekends on short notice. Work outdoors daily throughout the year, including rain, warmer temperatures, or cold weather that is consistent with Northern California Climate. California National Primate Research Center employees are directly or indirectly engaged in the performance of work on Federal or State contracts and grants as well as periodically come into contact with controlled substances; and are expected to abide by the UC Policy on Substance Abuse, the Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, and the State Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1990.
