Job Description:

Airbus is looking for a Head of Manufacturing Engineering & Industrial Technical Support to join our A220 team based in Mobile, AL.

As Head of Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Technical Support, you will lead the A220 Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Support teams across the full FAL and Customer Line scope. This role drives operational excellence by overseeing technical shop floor support, industrial ramp-up, and continuous improvement (AOS) strategies to ensure local performance aligns with global Center of Competence (CoC) guidelines. Provide operational leadership for A220 industrial functions, including Manufacturing Engineering, Tooling, and Site Services. You will define and execute local industrial strategies, driving performance and continuous improvement throughout the assembly and delivery process.

Your working environment:

On 'Airbus Way' you will find the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility for commercial aircraft. Opened at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley in 2015, the facility produces A320 Family aircraft and added a second product line for the A220 in 2019. The facility, which strengthens the U.S. aerospace industry, is part of Airbus' strategy to enhance its global competitiveness by meeting the growing needs of its customers in the United States and beyond.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Coordination: Act as the primary transversal lead for Mobile-based CoCs, fostering close collaboration with Mirabel counterparts to synchronize industrial standards and performance.

  • Industrial Integration: Drive the end-to-end integration of Jigs and Tools, ensuring the effective deployment of a $5M annual CAPEX budget to support site ramp-up and stability.

  • Budgetary Management: Oversee local OPEX budgets, ensuring all CoC activities remain lean and compliant with the established Operating Plan (OP).

  • Reporting & Governance: Provide direct visibility and reporting to the Head of A220 Mobile while maintaining a dotted-line alignment with the Mirabel Head of CoC.

Your Challenges:

  • Manufacturing Engineering

    • Identify, follow-up and ensure implementation of all needs concerning Work Orders and Methods change requests being the local technical leader at each station, under A220 Manufacturing Engineering CoC authority.

    • Implement and improve all Jigs and tools for each station to answer the need of the industrial Ramp-up according to the build process under A220 Manufacturing Engineering CoC authority.

    • Is the voice of A220 Manufacturing Engineering CoC locally, taking care of competencies preservation and evolution.

    • Configuration control Management. Responsible for configuration control as well as the implementation of the new modifications applicable to the AC under A220 CoC technical authority.

    • Lead the introductions of HOVs and new products in the FAL Mobile under A220 Manufacturing Engineering CoC authority.

  • Industrial Engineering

    • Responsible for the Industrial Engineering including SLB Team, Tooling and the industrial development projects in the FAL and the interface to Methods in Mirabel.

    • Implement the aircraft manufacturing industrial processes (build sequence), around the product and the associated procedures within the same build process as the other 2 production lines located in Mirabel.

    • Accountable for the prevention and elimination of disturbances in the manufacturing process.

    • Driving the improvement in the FAL with the PPS team.

  • Production Support Tech Focal

    • Accountable for the Production Support Tech Focal in the FAL Flow line and Flight Line / Delivery Center with a strong link to the A220 Production Support Tech Focal teams based in Mirabel.

    • Accountable for managing critical disruptions / ANDON blocking major production and delivery milestones (Takt, FOT, ToT, Customer Acceptance), ensuring on time enablement of these milestones in collaboration with relevant stakeholders (Engineering, Quality, Customer Acceptance Managers).

  • Lead and Manage A220 Ramp-Up

    • Set up and manage ramp-up reviews and Steering Committees for each specific rate (6DR, 5DR) and for each main ramp-up milestones (G2, G5, G7, G9) under the A220 VSM Industrial authority.

    • Ensure stakeholders progress and deliver on each Ramp-Up relevant project to secure ramp-up enablers: Mobile Site Services, Human Resources, Quality, Procurement/Ordering, etc.

    • Ensure full integration and harmonization of FAL Mobile A220 Ramp-Up plan with A220 VSM Industrial.

    • Set up, lead and manage Run @Rate Takts prior to each formal rate increase milestone.

  • Site Services

    • Accountable to coordinate site services for A220 to include performance reviews at SLA and site level.

    • Review performance of Mobile Site Services in general and in terms of Ramp-Up enablers.

    • Support integration of site services governance with Mirabel.

    • Identify cost competitiveness opportunities and risks with site service providers and recipients, participate in site competitiveness initiatives to support A220 AOP alignment.

    • Address any deviations with relevant measures and actions at Mobile Site level; involve Mirabel sponsorship as required.

    • Ensure site services SLAs are current and support A220 business needs.

  • Additional Responsibilities:

    • Manage "long-distance" relations with all relevant external functions and stakeholders.

    • Ensure consistency of operations and products in the A220 Program VSM by regular exchange of best practices between local and partnership business units.

    • Preserve a high standard of technical knowledge among the workforce in a context of mobility, turn-over and integration of new operators.

    • Ensure fulfillment of legal and airworthiness requirements to ensure Operation, such as demonstration of compliance for the maintenance of the POA under the A220 VSM Industrial authority.

    • Contribute to enhancing the corporate image by ensuring the FAL environment standard is high and continuously improved.

    • Manage assigned Operations performance improvement projects and/or activities as part of A220.

    • FAL Mobile performance improvement plan (ex: lead time reduction, cost convergence, etc.).

    • Secure the use and adherence to Airbus Project Management practices, involving as needed FAL Mobile and/or Mirabel PMO organizations.

    • Support the development of Airbus Project Management culture in A220 FAL Mobile.

    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Your Boarding Pass:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing, Engineering or a relevant field and completion of a technology certification, preferred

  • Master's degree preferred

Experience:

  • 15 years of relevant experience in aviation with (Bachelors) or 13 years of relevant experience in aviation with (Masters)

  • Knowledge of basic Production and Quality rules in aviation

  • 5+ years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrialization or equivalent roles

  • 5+ years of experience in managing & leading teams

  • Experience in a multicultural work environment

Licensure/Certifications:

  • Airbus Bronze PM Certification (or above) preferred

  • A sound knowledge of Airbus P&PM processes, methods and tools

  • PMI-PMP certificate preferred

Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:

Required:

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills: listening, negotiation, conflict management, communication and intercultural skills in an international context

  • Ability to deploy Project Management processes, methods and tools

  • Ensure sharing of best practices within PM community (including feedback, lessons learnt); and thereby contribute to the development of a project management culture in Airbus

  • Excellent knowledge and good work experience in project management is mandatory

  • Excellent understanding of aircraft final assembly industrial processes

  • Solution oriented way of working in high stress environment to ensure critical milestones

  • Vision: able to see and read computer screen and other electronic equipment with screens, able to read documents, reports and engineering drawings.

  • Equipment Operation (personal computer, telephone, copies, fax machine, and related office equipment and using electronic identification card to enter building floors and internal doors): able to operate most office and personal electronic equipment and some tools including production tools such as hydraulic lifts.

  • Carrying: able to carry documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.

  • Lifting: able to lift documents, tools, drawings, electronic equipment up to 30lbs/14kgs.

  • Pushing / Pulling: able to push and pull small office furniture and some equipment and tools.

  • Sitting: able to sit for long periods of time in meetings, working on computer.

  • Squatting / Kneeling: able to squat or kneel to retrieve or replace items stored on low shelving.

  • Standing: able to stand for discussions in offices or on production floor.

  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice.

  • Walking (include routine walking such as to a shared printer to retrieve documents): able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
