JOB SUMMARY:
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 250 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.
The Publications Coordinator supports CSIS's publications process as part of the External Relations department. The role will work closely with a team of editors, publication designers, and data visualization designers, as well as the chief communications officer and other members of External Relations and the iDeas Lab teams to support all aspects of publication processes, ensure the timely production of short-form analysis on major policy issues, and coordinate with in-house communications and graphic design staff.
The salary range for this position is $57,000 to $58,000 based on experience.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
* Assisting with copyediting and layout of CSIS's short-form written work, digital products, and other written works, including by:
* Managing short-form written analysis portfolio with quick turnarounds, sometimes in same-day, serving as the primary editor for CSIS's short-form content
* Communicate frequently with senior and junior program staff to plan for, anticipate, and manage publication timelines and expectations, particularly coinciding with major global events
* Exercise strong editorial judgment to improve and perfect written content, as well as identify potential issue areas that need to be addressed
* Providing additional support for other miscellaneous short digital products, including for the CSIS website, and assist longer publications as needed, including working with CSIS graphic designers on layout of publications and request for data visualization
* Reviewing publications prior to and following posting on the CSIS website to ensure CSIS style and standards are being met
* Implement day-to-day coordination of publications and publication systems/processes, including by:
* Tracking CSIS publications on Monday.com
* Serving as liaison with CSIS program staff and coordinating with publishers, freelancers, vendors, designers, and CSIS's website management team
* Reviewing publication postings on the CSIS website per best practice and established standards in collaboration with the CSIS website management team
* Assisting with publication postings or updates on the CSIS website as needed
* Assisting in administrative tasks, including standard operating procedures (SOPs) and updating CSIS style guidance
* Other duties and projects as needed
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
* Bachelors' degree in a relevant field, including political science, international relations, or journalism.
* Minimum of one to two years of experience in publishing or a related field with emphasis on copyediting and training in Chicago Manual of Style.
* Knowledge and interest in national security or international relations strongly preferred
* Digital publications experience and familiarity with print publication processes.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office (including Word and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
* Familiarity with other creative, web, and/or digital technologies a plus and openness to adapting to new technologies.
