The Spirit of the Position:

As a senior leader, the Vice President, Claims Management, owns the strategic direction of the company's insurance claims programs to minimize cost and optimize outcomes. This executive leads cross-functional teams and partners across the organization, and manages key vendors, to ensure our insurance programs align with expanding and diverse business needs. Leveraging claims data to inform risk practices, the VP champions our people-first culture by prioritizing the safety of employees, customers, and clients.

Principal Job Duties:

Claims and Portfolio Management


  • Serve as the senior leader and primary executive responsible for claims management and loss portfolio management, providing strategic oversight, driving performance optimization, and leading cross-functional initiatives to resolve complex issues.
  • Direct and lead claims management functions, ensuring adherence to best practices while providing executive leadership with strategic reporting and actionable recommendations to support informed decision-making, including claims resolution strategies, oversight of central service relationships such as Third-Party Administrators, outside insurance counsel and other critical support assets.
  • Monitor key risk indicators to measure exposure, identify emerging risks, inform decision-making and work with teams to improve performance.
  • Lead the development and implementation of risk management and portfolio management strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Build and lead a high-performing claims management team by cultivating a culture of accountability and excellence, developing talent pipelines, and fostering continuous professional growth across the organization.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of risk management processes and controls, including development and revision of internal claim investigation and handling guidelines, litigation management and billing guidelines, Third Party Administrator Claims and Service Agreements.
  • Collaborate with the company's DOT administrator/manager, Operational Audit and Operational Safety management teams to implement best practices.
  • Manage third party administrators and LAZ insurance counsel to ensure the best claims outcomes in line with LAZ handling philosophy and best practice requirements for each vendor. Lead and oversee regular claim review meetings with Third Party Administrators, insurance carriers and defense counsel.
  • Lead the implementation and use of KPIs and other analytics to track and trend risk, as well as implement improved practices for LAZ team and external partner performance.
  • Evaluate current practices for processing/administering claims, and innovate, strategize and implement practices for ongoing, continuous improvement to reduce frequency of claims.
  • Oversee insurance reserves for GL, GKL, WC, and Auto.
  • Control overall resolution processes, initial and ongoing claims investigation processes, evaluation of risk transfer targets or opportunities, mediation, other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and trial monitoring.
  • Liaise between LAZ operational staff, insurance carrier claims personnel, and risk control, safety and broker/carrier/third-party administrator on general liability, workers compensation and auto claim issues as needed.
  • Participate in due diligence for M&A as requested.

Requirements:

Travel


  • Based on business needs but anticipating up to 15%.

Education


  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) preferred.

Experience


  • 10+ years of progressive experience with corporate insurance and claims programs, preferably involving complex self-insured/deductible components with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role, preferably within a large, national organization.
  • Corporate claims and portfolio management experience with GL, Auto, GKL, Property, and Workers' Compensation claims and coverages, including oversight of TPA's, defense counsel, reserves and litigation strategy.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance carriers and their resources, brokerage resources, and vendor partners on a national or global basis, with experience presenting claims trends and risk exposure to C-suite executives.
  • Risk management and mitigation experience required, including leveraging claims data and analytics to inform decision-making and improve outcomes.
  • Experience handling and analyzing "risk transfer" opportunities, e.g., subrogation. Indemnification, etc.
  • Preferred background handling and managing claims in higher volume jurisdictions such as California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Georgia and Pennsylvania.
  • Professional designations such as AIC and/or CPCU a plus.

  • Knowledge of Word, Power Point and General Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Experience with claims analytics platforms or business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI) to drive actionable insights and cost reduction strategies is a plus.
