Simulation Operations Specialist (Simulation/Clinical Labs)

We are seeking a Simulation Operations Specialistwho will be part of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Center for Simulation & Immersive Learn team and is responsible for simulation equipment and the management and operations of daily simulation functions. The incumbent reports to the Simulation Operations Manager and works collaboratively with all members of the team and stakeholders across the university and the health system.

This role engages with activities related to center management and operations, and learning support. To be successful in this position the incumbent will heavily rely on ability to understand and manage technology, be a proactive problem-solver, be detailed oriented, be customer centered, process and outcomes-oriented, and demonstrate ability to communicate effectively and learn quickly.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Center Management & Operations

  • Serve as a simulator operator by creating, testing, and running scenarios with faculty instructors assuring that all equipment is in good working condition prior to the start of all simulations.
  • Establish and maintain effective workflows collaboratively to ensure smooth operations and optimal learning environment.
  • Facilities management: room set-up and clean-up for clinical simulations and debriefings; accountable for having the room props, equipment, and other resources prepared for the scheduled simulation activity.
  • Inventory management:

oIdentify, procure, and ensure that all equipment, supplies, and space are planned out and available for teaching sessions.

oDocument and account for inventory changes.

oTrouble shoot when equipment or systems malfunction by establishing close contact with suppliers and adequate training.

  • Manage the center scheduling system to ensure efficient use of space for training sessions, workshops, and other activities.
  • Maintains competence and knowledge of healthcare equipment.
  • Provides backup technical support for computer-based multimedia systems and their components, including operating digital camera, video cameras, monitors, LCD displays, and other equipment.
  • Equipment use and manipulation: Understands the use and operation of different simulator technologies ranging from anatomic models and task trainers to screen-based simulation to full-body patient simulators and virtual reality surgical simulators.
  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging simulation technologies, including basic theory, design, and implementation.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and up-grades of simulation equipment.
  • Maintains current knowledge of simulation equipment and operations manuals.
  • Collaborates with leadership and faculty to coordinate all simulation events.

Learning Support

  • Supports the simulation operations of assigned courses.
  • Trains faculty and other center staff in the operational aspects of simulation.
  • May need advanced knowledge or willingness to learn teaching modalities (e.g. virtual reality, standardized patients).
  • Plays a role in simulation teaching when needed.
  • Promotes and communicates the center's mission and goals (provides information to faculty, staff, learners, and visitors concerning the functions of the Simulation Center).
  • Center operations improvement: Participates in technical training as necessary; attend conferences to stay current with simulation technology.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • One year of basic allied health, simulation, or relevant experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • EMT, CNA, or other similar allied-health related certification.
  • CPR certification
  • Bachelor's Degree in a health or science-related field.
  • CHSOS Certification or within 1 year of hire.
  • Experience with medical simulation training.
  • Experience supporting faculty in an academic environment.
  • Experience in an academic health system.
