The primary duties of the NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader include planning, directing, and monitoring all aspects of multi-disciplined bridge projects including those with a high degree of technical complexity, involving a diverse project staff. The preferred candidate will have experience in delivering complex bridge design projects for clients. The candidate must demonstrate extensive design experience in long-span bridges as well as a good overall background in complex bridges and more common bridge structures. A candidate with demonstrated experience in alternative delivery (Design Build, Progressive Design Build, P3) projects is desirable. The candidate will be involved with technical oversight and coordination of several projects concurrently and will participate in design and production of schematic, design development, and contract document work in conjunction with Project Managers, appropriate technical professionals, and other disciplines. Ensures project deliverables and supporting documentation are complete, understandable, conform to applicable and industry standards relative to their intended purpose, including client and HDR requirements. The duties of the NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader include overseeing and/or serving in a lead technical role or problem-solving role on bridge design projects. You will perform complex structural planning, analysis, and design for all structural aspects of transportation projects. Typical projects include suspension, cable stay, arch, segmental, extradosed, steel and prestressed concrete bridges. You must be comfortable being viewed as a technical leader in engineering analysis and design and have proven background in technical leadership on these types of projects. You will often perform as a technical specialist and supervise junior and mid-level engineers in the performance of engineering tasks. This role will also serve in a capacity of managing, supporting or leading major pursuits. Responsible for developing QA/QC procedures and completing reviews of bridge plans for complex projects. Acts as mentor/supervisor for less experienced bridge designers. The NY/NJ Major Bridges Leader will also ensure that emerging technologies are being implemented and that HDR is continually advancing complex bridge design capabilities. Will also participate in the selection of key staff nationally/globally and identify strategic hires needed for the growth and evolution of HDR's Bridge program. - BS/MS in Structural Engineering or closely related field is required.
- New York or New Jersey PE license strongly preferred, PE licensure in other states highly desirable as well as ability to obtain reciprocity with other states as needed.
- SE license desirable
- 15+ years project and client management experience with significant project experience
- MS Office experience
- Effective communication, leadership, planning, and mentoring skills.
- Must have the ability to interact with various design teams, have excellent organizational, project management and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to provide performance coaching and mentoring to less experienced staff.
- Versatility in the following software products: Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Inventor, Civil 3D, Rhino, Revit, MicroStation, Larsa 4D Bridge Plus, SAP 2000, FB MultiPier, Leap Bridge Enterprise
- Established client relationships in the NY/NJ and New England region among major bridge clients.
- Experience working with MTA, NYSDOT, NJDOT, NY State Bridge Authority, NJ Turnpike Authority, Port Authority of NY & NJ, Mass DOT, and other major regional clients is highly desirable.
- Experience in rail bridges, pedestrian bridges, and projects with trail/bike path facilities.
- Experience working on projects involving signature bridges.
- Experience in pursuits for bridge-centered projects.
- Experience preparing project scope, fee, and schedule.
- Experience in bridge parametric modeling and design
- Experience and active participation in industry organizations, technical conferences, and professional associations.
- Preference given to candidates currently residing in the NY/NJ Area

- Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
- 10 years of experience
- Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
- Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience
- Experienced in development and management of diverse teams
- Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
