University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) serves as Sacramento State's recognized auxiliary organization, providing essential operational, financial, and entrepreneurial support to the University. UEI manages a $141 million annual enterprise that includes research and sponsored programs administration, retail and dining services, student housing, real estate development, and other revenue-generating operations that directly benefit the campus community. Operating within the CSU policy framework while maintaining the flexibility of a nonprofit corporation, UEI allows Sacramento State to innovate, grow strategic partnerships, and expand services in ways that directly support student success, faculty research, and community impact.

Broad Scope & Function

As the chief executive officer of University Enterprises, the Executive Director provides leadership and vision for UEI in support of the instruction, scholarship, and service programs of California State University, Sacramento. The Executive Director oversees administrative support for research and sponsored programs, campus retail enterprises, UEI real estate development projects, and new entrepreneurial operations that generate revenue to benefit the University.

Operating within the policy framework of the UEI Board of Directors, the California State University Board of Trustees, and the University President, the Executive Director directs and coordinates UEI-administered programs that provide essential services and facilities integral to the University's educational mission.

The Executive Director reports to the President of Sacramento State, receives general direction from the Board of Directors, and serves as a member of the President's Extended Cabinet. All UEI staff report directly or indirectly to the Executive Director, who may also be called upon by the President to lead or participate in University or community committees, boards, or groups that advance the educational mission of the University.

Duties & Responsibilities

    Plans, organizes, and coordinates UEI activities in support of the University. Represents UEI before the academic and business communities, in dealings with other colleges and universities and with the local community.
  • Initiates planning of programs and projects which provide support to and assist the growth of the University. Explores, proposes, and develops Board-approved public/private partnerships in support of the University's strategic plan.
  • Responsible for the financial security, fiscal management, legal compliance, and sound business practices for all UEI activities.
  • Assures the proper fiscal management of UEI's operations including but not limited to providing for the satisfaction of short- and long-term cash flow needs of UEI, ensures the maintenance of proper reserves, and ensures that UEI maintains compliance with all applicable laws, and campus and systemwide policies for all of the University's grant and contract activity with Federal or State agencies and other externally funded program sources and for all sponsored program activity.
  • Responsible for funding, construction, property management, and programs of all UEI real estate-related operations.
  • Provides direct management oversight to contracted bookstore, dining (including retail dining, as well as voluntary and mandatory/residence halls meal plans), and UEI student housing operations and oversees use and maintenance of all UEI assets including but not limited to UEI's real estate holdings.
  • Ensures conformity to the unique legal and CSU policy requirements stemming from the operation of UEI as a recognized campus auxiliary organization while making maximum use of fiscal and legal flexibilities to facilitate the programs of the UEI for the benefit of the University.
  • Responsible for UEI's fiscal operations, business services, accounting and information technology functions, human resources functions, affirmation action plan, safety program, the development and production of marketing and communications programs, and overall quality of services delivered to the University.
  • Bears ultimate authority and responsibility for supervising staff in ways consistent with UEI policies including but not limited to its affirmative action program, and all applicable laws. This includes but is not limited to selection, training, career development, discipline, termination, performance review and salary adjustment of all UEI directors and any other employees the Executive Director supervises directly. Responsible for developing and undertaking efforts and programs designed to enhance employee morale, staff retention, and staff work performance.
  • Recommends policy and enforces and carries out policy decisions made by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for providing orientation to new members of the UEI Board of Directors to ensure their familiarity with UEI's programmatic and fiscal operations, as well as the policy, framework, and laws within which UEI operates as an auxiliary organization within the California State University system.
  • Participates in professional development activities, organizations and associations which benefit UEI's operations, opportunities, and strategic planning.
  • Responsible for negotiating and reviewing commercial service contracts and new business opportunities, including drafting and reviewing contract language and working with appropriate stakeholders such as UEI Legal Counsel on final contract document(s).
  • Ensures UEI's vision, goals, and plans align with and support the overall mission of the university.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' degree from an accredited University in business administration, public administration, pre-law, real estate or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience providing successful leadership to a large complex profit or non-profit enterprise.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment in successfully leading and supervising staff in a large variety of specialties such as the following:
    • administration of support services related to grants, contracts, research and sponsored projects
    • financial management and accounting, including fund accounting
    • contracted bookstore and dining operations
    • contracted student housing operations
    • property development and real estate negotiations/asset management
    • marketing and communication
    • human resources management
  • Demonstrated experience understanding complex financial reports, cash flow management, budgets, financial analysis and long-term financial planning and forecasting.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with individuals from diverse groups and institutional constituencies, including board members, university administrators, faculty, staff, students, governmental and private agencies and the public at large.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing within a complex organizational environment that requires the application of appropriate judgment, discretion, and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of technology uses at corporate and departmental levels to benefit corporation and customer service best practices. Demonstrated ability to use technology in day-to-day communications and transactions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices and trends to develop new revenue producing and service opportunities.
  • Ability to negotiate and manage sophisticated and diverse multi-million dollar commercial enterprises; experience negotiating, and overseeing vendor contracts for services.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, business planning strategy skills, and business transaction negotiating skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from an accredited University, California State Bar License, or Certified Public Accountant License.
  • Extensive experience in real estate development and management.
  • California Real Estate salesperson license, Real estate broker license, corporate real estate broker license, real property administrator certification (RPA), certified property manager certification (CPM), or certified apartment manager certification (CAM) or equivalent.

Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $190,000 - $250,000 annually. This Sacramento-based role follows a hybrid schedule (3 days onsite, 2 remote).
