Professional Fee Coder
Job Summary The ZSFG Department of Radiology performs approximately 200,000 studies yearly and professional fee income from clinical activity constitutes a significant percentage of the department's funding. The department's financial stability is dependent on the ability to process charges as well as manage, analyze, track and report on revenue cycle issues.
Under the supervision of the ZSFG Radiology Site Director, the Professional Fee Coder is responsible for managing, organizing and maintaining the timely flow of activity for the department's revenue cycle, with an emphasis on coding, billing and charge management. This position will handle billing and coding activities, and address questions and issues from the UCSF Clinical Practice Group (CPG) as well as providers and administration from the department.
S/he will interface with department providers if questions arise around completeness or clarity of documentation. The incumbent will, on an as needed basis, play an active role with reconciling charges in Epic by resolving issues in various work queues.
Other responsibilities include but are not limited to timely review, coding, batching, submission, and tracking of all charges. The Professional Fee Coder will coordinate and process charges by abstracting and assigning CPT and ICD-10 codes from medical information from patient records, thereby ensuring accuracy of work and adherence to established coding procedures. S/he will keep the ZSFG Radiology Revenue Program Manager informed on all activity around billing and coding. The incumbent will have the option to participate in professional organizations such as the Radiology Business Management Association (RBMA) and the Radiology Coding Certification Board (RCCB).
The ability to independently problem-solve is paramount for success in this position. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $72,800 - $109,200 (Annual Rate). Department Description The Department of Radiology is one of the largest departments in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), generating more than $70 million in professional fee revenues each year, and annual grant awards of $40-60 million. The missions of the department include research, teaching, and patient care. The department operates across six sites in San Francisco. Major activities of the department include general radiology, mammography, interventional radiology, CT, MRI, ultrasound, abdominal and cardiac imaging.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Minimum of 1 year of coding experience
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or equivalent certification in good standing with AAPC or AHIMA
- Thorough knowledge and demonstrated expertise of diagnostic radiology CPT and ICD-10 coding practices, knowledge of interventional radiology a plus
- Must have experience working with CPT, ICD-10, E/M Documentation Guidelines (1995/1997), CCI edits, Medicare LCDs, state and federal regulations as well as payor billing requirements
- Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and concepts of the healthcare revenue cycle. Knowledge of any or all of the following: billing, collections, charge capture, contractual adjustments, third-party reimbursements, and cash management
- Maintain high accuracy rates (typically 95%+) and meet daily productivity standards of 30+ plus encounters an hour
- Ability to thrive in a high-volume, deadline-driven work environment
- Ability to understand the importance of maximizing revenue while maintaining compliance
- Working knowledge of reporting instruments, metrics and / or dashboard design
- Detail oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage time efficiently, prioritize tasks, set schedules, and complete projects in a timely and cost-effective manner
- Proficiency in a common database, spreadsheet and presentation software
- Demonstrated communications skills, with the ability to interpret and convey complex clinical finance information in a clear, concise manner. Ability to summarize and present reports and presentations
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate the effectiveness of workflows and systems
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team environment with internal staff and faculty in a wide variety of business and clinical areas
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and radiology coding guidelines
- Prior working knowledge of the EPIC or other EHR and RIS systems
- Experience working directly with physicians, APPs, and staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic medical center experience
- Advanced Coding Certification(s)
License/Certification
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or equivalent certification in good standing with AAPC or AHIMA
