Make your mark for patients

UCB Biosciences is seeking to hire an exceptional Scientist I - Functional Genomics & Muscle Biology to join our Genomics and Integrative Biology Group located in Durham, NC. This is an office-based position with the expectation of being in the lab 5 days a week. The role contributes at an in vitro technical level to design studies, produce and interpret data, and contribute to current and future drug discovery projects. Skills should include molecular and cell biology knowledge together with previous experience of a range of in vitro-based technology capabilities and screening approaches. Previous experience in working with muscle cells and/or neuromuscular diseases is a requirement.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Design and execution of functional genomics assays/screens to identify and validate novel targets including assessment of relevant biology in screening models, and validation of hits
  • Development of novel in vitro assays for functional genomics screens
  • Develop cell models for muscle disease modeling that can be used with functional genomics assay
  • Provide scientific insight into projects in consultation with UCB on functional genomics (medicinal chemists, cell biologists, disease area experts, antibody engineers, etc.)
  • Provide strong scientific thinking, develop hypotheses and drive scientific learnings on projects/functional genomics platform
  • Time split between 80:20 between wet lab and office responsibilities

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree with 3 to 6 years of experience or PhD with 0 to 2 years of experience in applicable field with record of scientific achievement as evidenced by publications, presentations, or patents
  • Experience in applying cellular and biochemical techniques for target identification, validation, genetic screening and evaluating the mechanism of action of novel molecular entities
  • Experience in molecular biology approaches and advanced cell biology techniques (flow cytometry, gene and protein analysis, PCR, cloning, lentiviral library prep)
  • Excellent communicator, with demonstrated ability to work across disciplines
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities and engage in a multidisciplinary environment

Preferred experience:

  • Experience in single cell analysis
  • Experience in in vivo models for Neuromuscular Disorders

Base Salary Range: $88,000 to $115,500
