Overview

D435 Main Propulsion Machinery is in search of an experienced engineer to support VIRGINIA, LOS ANGELES, and SEAWOLF Class in service propulsors and propeller engineering. As integral members of the Navy Propulsor Team, Engineers in this group provide high quality engineering, design, and manufacturing and construction support services to the Navy, new construction shipyards, and maintenance naval shipyards. The group is responsible for the fixed assembly propulsor design, ship integration of propulsor Government Furnished Equipment (GFE), and integration of ships systems that interface with propulsors. Engineers in the group work closely with mechanical design to create, review, and issue design disclosures supporting the propulsor program. The group frequently works with other members of the Navy Propulsor Team including Electric Boat's shock, hydrodynamics, shafting and bearing engineering, electrical and ship signatures departments, and Navy laboratories.

Duties include but are not limited to:

    Providing shipyard construction support for propulsor installation and component shipment offloads.
  • Design and engineering of GFE propulsor fixed assembly components.
  • Developing engineering calculations and design disclosures.
  • Evaluating and resolving vendor manufacturing and installation issues through preparation of written dispositions and/or engineering assessments.
  • Preparing written engineering procedures in support of shipyard installation efforts.
  • Design and engineering of government and shipyard lifting, handling, and transportation hardware.
  • Interfacing regularly with members of the Navy Propulsor Team.
  • Mentoring less experienced engineers.
  • Occasional travel to Washington DC, vendor sites, or Naval Shipyards may be required.


Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Marine/Ocean or Aerospace/Aeronautical Engineering
  • 5-10 years of post-graduate engineering experience is required

Preferred

  • Master of Science in Engineering


Skills

The individual should have the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and procedures. Strong proficiency and experience with mechanical engineering principles including fastener design, geometric design and tolerancing, structural strength evaluations, analytic and numerical analysis methods, and rotating machinery is desired. This position requires strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Engineers must work well with all levels of engineering, trades, trade management, design, planning, program office and the Navy Propulsor Team. Background or experience in project management as a task lead and experience with Electric Boat earned value management system is desired but not required. Background or experience in finite element analysis methods is desired but not required. Experience with Electric Boat specific software: NX/Teamcenter, Electronic Desktop, JCALs, SPARS, and LWM is a plus.
