About the Role: Fermilab's Finance Organization seeks a Senior Financial Analyst to assist in advanced financial planning, analysis, and reporting for assigned divisions, organizational units, or projects (typically $100M or less). This individual delivers complex budget submissions, cost and expenditure analysis, and actionable insights to support strategic decision-making. The Senior Financial Analyst serves as a subject matter expert, guiding colleagues, supporting enterprise financial systems, and developing processes that enhance the accuracy, compliance, and effectiveness of financial operations. What your day-to-day as a Senior Financial Analyst will look like:
- Participate in the preparation, consolidation, and submission of the annual budget to the U.S. Department of Energy for assigned areas or projects. Prepare detailed budget projections and multi-year forecasts by incorporating strategic guidance from the Laboratory Directorate.
- Consolidate and analyzes financial data for specific cost categories (e.g., personnel, materials, services) and/or projects; conducts periodic reviews of costs and obligations; identifies trends and anomalies; prepares reports for senior management review.
- Conduct periodic reviews of Construction and Equipment Work-in-Process to determine appropriate capitalization or asset reclassification.
- Analyze Effort Reporting for alignment with manpower and cost estimates; investigates significant variances and coordinates corrective actions with management.
- Provide financial guidance to assigned organizations on business functions such as inventory/property management, procurement tracking, and personnel cost planning.
- Lead user testing, documentation, and training for enterprise financial system implementations; serves as a key contributor to system enhancements.
- Develop and implements methods, procedures, and best practices to improve budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes.
- Mentor and supports junior analysts by sharing expertise and providing technical guidance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Skills and Attributes for Success:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field with a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or related functions.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, budget development, and financial analysis methodologies.
- Proficiency in financial systems, ERP tools, and advanced Excel functions (e.g., pivot tables, modeling, data analysis).
- Ability to analyze complex financial data, identify variances, and provide clear, actionable recommendations.
- Knowledge of federal budgeting processes and cost principles, particularly in DOE or other government-funded research environments (preferred).
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information to leadership.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while exercising sound judgment. * Demonstrated leadership and mentoring capabilities to support and guide less experienced staff.
- Problem-solving mindset with a focus on accuracy, compliance, and continuous improvement.

- Hybrid: is a work arrangement in which an employee as part of an ongoing regular schedule, works at an alternative worksite in the United States (e.g., an employee's residence) on some days and at the primary worksite on other days.
