Job Summary

As a recognized patient safety expert, applies comprehensive knowledge of professional concepts and industry practices to lead the most complex projects of large size and scope that have critical impact throughout the medical center and / or organization. Establishes patient safety annual goals and action plans for compliance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $113,800 - $242,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Quality & Safety consists of Adult Quality & Safety, Benioff Children's Hospitals (BCH) Quality & Safety, Hospital Epidemiology & Infection Prevention, Analytics & Clinical Effectiveness and Clinical Documentation Integrity. The teams are made of multidisciplinary professionals with diverse backgrounds. The role of the Department is to support UCSF Health to deliver safe, equitable and high-quality care to the communities we serve.

Patient Safety is a division within the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. The focus of the Patient Safety division is preventing, mitigating, or reducing harm from medical errors and system defects. Activities include risk surveillance and analysis of potential or actual medical errors and hazardous conditions, and process improvement to prevent future adverse events.

Required Qualifications


  • Expert skills in data analysis, project management, facilitating group work, and working in a hospital environment with systems improvement.
  • Skills in statistical data analysis.
  • Expert knowledge of clinical quality-of-care issues and patient safety methodologies, tools, regulatory requirements, and policies.
  • Highly developed skills and expertise in project management, with demonstrated ability to initiate projects and lead teams, prioritize tasks, and direct projects successfully from inception to completion on task and on schedule.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with a broad range of clinical and technical staff, representatives of external regulatory agencies, and mentoring staff.
  • Highly developed ability to effectively convey the most complex clinical, technical, and educational information both verbally and in writing, and to produce high-quality reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Expert knowledge of various clinical and business software packages and of the specialized applications and data management programs used in patient safety and quality improvement systems.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in a large multi facility health system/ academic institution
  • Master's degree or equivalent in a healthcare related profession including nursing, public health, healthcare administration, or other relevant field.
  • Lean/Six Sigma
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ)

License/Certification

Bachelor's degree in nursing or health discipline, or licensed clinician in the State of California (e.g., Nursing, Pharmacy, Respiratory, Physical Therapist), and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
