This position supports enterprise networking infrastructure across clinical and academic environments. The role may require participation in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours maintenance to support critical healthcare operations.

Purpose

Provide senior-level technical leadership in the design, implementation, and operation of secure, scalable, and highly available enterprise network infrastructure supporting clinical, academic, and administrative systems.

Job Summary

The Senior Network Engineer serves as the technical lead for core networking design, implementation, and operations across hospital and academic environments. This role is responsible for architecting, deploying, and maintaining enterprise-class networking infrastructure to support clinical and enterprise workloads, including Epic EHR and other mission-critical healthcare applications. Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations or Chief Technology Officer, the Senior Network Engineer collaborates with cloud, infrastructure, endpoint, and security teams and works closely with peers such as Senior Infrastructure Engineers, Solution Architects, and Cybersecurity Analysts. The role ensures network stability, security, scalability, and high availability across data center, campus, cloud, and clinical environments.

Responsibilities

Network Architecture & Engineering

  • Designs, deploys, and optimizes enterprise network infrastructure, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VPN, and SD-WAN technologies.

  • Architects secure, redundant, and scalable network solutions across data center, campus, cloud, and clinical environments.

  • Leads network segmentation, VLAN design, firewall configuration, and identity-based access control for compliance and security.

  • Develops network topology diagrams and technical specifications.

  • Evaluates emerging technologies for integration into the network environment.

Network Operations & Administration

  • Administers and troubleshoots routing, switching, wireless, and firewall platforms (e.g., Cisco, Palo Alto, Aruba).
  • Ensures availability and performance of Epic and third-party healthcare systems through resilient network connectivity.

  • Implements network monitoring, performance tuning, and incident response using tools such as SolarWinds, Splunk, Armis, and Nessus.

  • Maintains HIPAA compliance, network security, and healthcare-grade reliability.

  • Provides escalation support for lower-tier network staff.

Automation & Optimization

  • Proactively monitors, performs capacity planning, and optimizes network infrastructure for scalability and efficiency.

  • Supports automation of network provisioning, configuration, and monitoring through scripting and orchestration tools.

  • Implements process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Aligns network upgrades with strategic timelines.

  • Tracks and reports measurable outcomes.

Collaboration, Mentorship & Project Delivery

  • Partners with cloud, infrastructure, endpoint, and security teams to enable secure and resilient operations.

  • Leads networking projects such as Epic go-live readiness, data center migrations, Wi-Fi upgrades, and new hospital technology deployments.

  • Mentors junior staff and provides technical leadership for complex networking issues.

  • Collaborates with vendors for procurement, support, and lifecycle management of networking solutions.

  • Participates in strategic planning and institutional technology initiatives.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Creates and maintains comprehensive network documentation, including SOPs and change logs.

  • Maintains asset inventories and configuration records.

  • Supports audits and compliance reviews.

  • Prepares executive summaries and technical briefs for leadership.

  • Ensures alignment with healthcare IT standards and regulatory requirements.

Marginal or Periodic Functions

  • Participates in an on-call rotation and after-hours maintenance activities.

  • Participates in emergency response and incident management during system outages.

  • Assists with vendor evaluations and contract negotiations.

  • Engages in cross-training with other IT disciplines (e.g., cybersecurity, data analytics).

  • Contributes to institutional committees and working groups on technology strategy.

  • Attends professional development conferences and certification programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in technical network engineering.

  • Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Network Engineering, Cybersecurity, or a related field.

  • 10 or more years of progressive experience in network architecture and operations.

  • Experience in a healthcare or hospital environment.

Preferred certifications
  • Network engineering certification such as CCNA through CCIE, or equivalent.

  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE).

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

  • AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP).

Working Environment/Equipment

Salary Range

$130,000 + depending on qualifications
