Position Overview
The General Maintenance Worker position in the Mover's department duties include moving, delivery, pick up and set-up of a variety of items throughout KU's campus. This position will regularly use light equipment including hand trucks, dollies, ratchet straps, tommy gates and other tools to assist with moving and securing items in a box truck. Work involves performance of manual tasks of more than ordinary difficulty, requiring special knowledge acquired through on-the-job training or experience. This position requires the operation of work issued vehicles including a 16' box truck.

Work Schedule is 7:30am-4pm Monday to Friday

Job Description
90% - Moving/Set up:
  • Loads and unloads trucks, moves equipment and furniture.
  • Sets up and tears down tables, chairs and staging materials for events.
  • Uses power tools to disassemble, reassemble and reconfigure desks and Herman Miller cubicle stations.
  • Moves and disposes of large equipment including refrigerators, freezers and lab equipment.
  • Uses work requests, daily agendas, CADs and other various printed or electronic resources to understand scope of individual tasks.
  • Directly interacts with customers on campus, responding to their needs and helping brainstorm solutions for them.
  • Keeps track of own labor and uses an iPad to enter that labor on service requests.
10% - Miscellaneous upkeep:
  • Preventative maintenance on all equipment, including tools, tables and chairs.
  • Keeps department spaces and equipment organized, including taking department trash out weekly.
  • Removes snow and ice from designated areas across campus.
  • Treats stairs and sidewalks with ice melt.
  • Other related work as assigned.

Position Requirements
  1. Reach, grasp, lift, carry and place moderately heavy loads frequently and heavy loads occasionally (up to 75 lbs) with or without accommodation.
  2. Perform work above normal heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures both hot and cold, inside and outdoors.
  3. Operate vehicles in transporting self and materials to job sites.
  4. Work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  5. Report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
  6. Must digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.

Required Qualifications
  1. High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  2. Six months of experience in any trades area. (Note: An associate's degree or vocational school certificate may replace this experience)
  3. Must have a valid driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Experience in any or all of the following trades: HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, Paint, Carpentry, and Masonry.
  2. Experience working on a relocation or event set up team.
  3. Experience working in a university, college or other multi-building campus environment.
