Residential Operations is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. In addition to providing service to residents, Residential Operations maintains facilities that include conference centers, office spaces, and short term lodging and housing facilities. Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Performs skilled electrician tasks for University-owned Housing, Dining, & Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE) facilities and its related buildings at on and off-campus locations as outlined below, and may be assigned other duties (including those in other craft areas) to accomplish the operational needs of the department. In compliance with HDAE goals and objectives, affirms and implements the department Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for a success in a multi-cultural society. Works in an environment, which is ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic. Works in a team environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6 years of experience working at a journeyman level as an electrician in commercial and residential environments. Required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

  • Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies and procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 60% Technical - Repairs, maintains, installs and inspects electrical systems and equipment such as motors, fixtures, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, switchboards, circuit breaker panels, alarm systems, controllers, circuit breakers and other transmission equipment, wiring devices and runs conduit and wire. Performs and records Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services on various Housing equipment. NOTE: P.M. on Emergency Generator Employs troubleshooting techniques to diagnose electrical malfunctions using a variety of test instruments, such as an ammeter, DVM or other voltage measurement devices. Repairs malfunctions by such methods as replacing burned out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring. Replaces motors and motor starters. Identifies and replaces defective circuit boards and other electrical components utilizing manufacturer provided schematics, blueprints or flow charts. Installs new or replacement components utilizing manufacturer's instructions, schematics or other engineering drawings. Tests electrical equipment for safety and efficiency; inspects circuits and wiring for specified shielding, grounding and repair or rewire system according to building codes and safety regulations. Makes standard computations related to load requirements, wiring or electrical equipment. Knowledge of current codes and regulations including CBC, NEC and NFPA.
  • 20% Specialized - Troubleshoots fire alarm systems malfunctions, reset alarms, replaces and tests detectors, initiating devices and fire alarm indicating devices, including horn/strobe devices. Keeps detailed records on tests performed. Performs and records Preventive Maintenance checks.
  • 10% General - Instructs or leads skilled, semi-skilled or unskilled assistants. Complies with department safety program as implemented by the supervisor. Researches and orders cost efficient electrical, alarm and lighting supplies needed to complete assigned or generated work orders. Generates and closes out computerized work orders. Utilizes a cell phone to communicate with dispatcher, supervisor and co-workers. Participates in training programs, including safety and professional development. Promotes customer service environment to residents/clients. Assists with the development and maintenance of a work environment, which is conducive to meeting the mission of the organization and supports the EEP. Responsible for completing job duties that demonstrates support for the Operations Team. Initiates communication directly with co-workers and or supervisor to improve and clarify working relationships, identifying problems and concerns, and seeking resolution to work-related conflicts. Participates in staff training & development workshops, retreats and meetings as determined by supervisor. Performs a variety of other skilled and unskilled tasks outside of assigned trade in support of the Residential Operations Maintenance Team that includes weekend pager duty and occasional overtime required to meet the operational needs of the Department. Affirms and implements the departmental Educational Equity Plan comprised of short and long term objectives that reflect a systematic approach to preparing both students and staff for success in a multicultural society. Affirms and implements the departmental "Strategic Plan" designing goals and objective that relate to the vision statement. May use any of the following tools to perform essential or non-essential duties: Pipe Cutter, Sawzall, Chop saw, Threader, Drill Press, Bearing Puller, Taps and Dies, Torches, Drill, Motor Hammer, Hack Saw, Multi-Meter, Wrenches, Screw Drivers, Socket Sets, Tape Measure, Wire Cutters and Strippers, Hammers, Grinders, Computer, Digital Voltmeter, Ammeter.
  • 5% Safety - Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures including but not limited to the use of and/or working on: Breathing Apparatus, Respiratory Protection, hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and safety harness. Adheres to current safety regulations and precautions as prescribed by the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Uniform Building Code, EPA regulations including storage and disposal procedures, common Electrical Shop practices and policies and other Federal, State and local agencies. Understands and adheres to the safety practices on use of all hand and power tools associated with electrical work and other building and maintenance trades. Understands and adheres to current safety practices in relation to proper ventilation and non-smoking rules when working with flammable substances and harmful inhalants. Develops, promotes, adheres to safety rules, standards or techniques as an integral part of business. Adheres and implements the 20-minute work rule for all repetitive work tasks. Promptly reports on the job accidents to the supervisor. Participates in safety programs.
  • 5% Security - Locks unoccupied areas before leaving them including windows and doors. Safeguard keys assigned by keeping them on your person at all times during working hours and securing them at the end of your shift. Unless on official business, your work keys are to remain on campus at all times. Notifies clients of work status by leaving a door tag in the area if unoccupied.
