UCSD Department of Dermatology was founded in January 2015 bringing together a team of 70 faculty members specializing in Adult and Pediatric & Adolescent Dermatology, making us one of the largest Dermatology programs in the nation. Our faculty are experts in their fields and are involved in a wide range of clinical, education and research endeavors. UCSD Dermatology has an extensive basic science and clinical research portfolio that allows for substantial funding support from NIH and extramural sources. Dermatology faculties have rich programs of skin research focused on immunology, microbiology, genetics and cancer. They have funded research programs on: 1) studies on the development of the innate immune system and its interaction with the skin microbiome, 2) trials comparing alternative treatments for management of psoriasis, rosacea and atopic dermatitis biologics, 3) studies of biomarkers for acne and acne rosacea, 4) the study of genetics and epigenetics of human skin development and progression to disease, 5) atopic dermatitis inflammation and antimicrobial peptides and 6) skin cancer development and melanoma acquired drug resistance.

Under the supervision of the PI, the incumbent will perform routine and specialized laboratory techniques in support of cell-based, biochemical, and in vivo dermatology research. The incumbent will assist with the execution of experiments, preparation of reagents, handling and processing of biological samples, maintenance of accurate laboratory records, and general laboratory operations. The position will work closely with the Principal Investigator and other laboratory personnel to support studies involving mammalian cell culture, biochemical assays, and mouse-based experiments. This role provides hands-on research experience in an academic biomedical research environment.

• Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree. Related fields may include any of the following fields of study: molecular biology and biochemistry.

• Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a diverse group.

• Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and share knowledge to inform and teach students and paraprofessionals new techniques.

• Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Demonstrated ability in following step wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.

• Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

• Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.

• Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Ability to assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies in the lab.

• Knowledge of biosafety techniques and practices. Experience to work with chemical and biological hazards and to recognize safety problems.

• Good organizational and effective time management skills.

• Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Willingness and ability to learn new software for analysis.

• Demonstrated experience in Dermatologic research and work with live animals such as mice.

• Demonstrated knowledge to read and use Material Safety Data Sheet's. Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements and the ability to write with correct syntax and grammar and to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S. Experienced in working and maintaining a sterile environment.

• Demonstrated experience with electrophoresis, Western blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, PCR, including those involved in cell culture, clonogenic assays, kinase assays, tape strip analysis, protein and protease assays and ELISA analysis.

• Demonstrated skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as used in DNA and protein analysis.

• Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials.

• Demonstrated skill in accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data.
