Work Hours: Daytime, M-F, 8-4:30 (other hours as needed to catch up on charges).

Job Summary:

The Charge Audit Specialist supports the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology (EP) Labs by ensuring accurate, complete, and compliant charge capture for procedural services. This role is the primary coder for these areas and partners closely with clinical, coding, revenue cycle, and compliance teams to identify and resolve charge discrepancies and strengthen revenue integrity.

Key responsibilities include:
  1. Audit charges for procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance in the following locations:
  • Cardiac Cath Lab at UNC Hospitals NC Memorial Hospital
  • Electrophysiology (EP) Lab at UNC Hospitals NC Memorial Hospital
  • Pediatric Cath Lab at UNC Hospitals Children's Hospital
  • Hillsborough Cath and EP Lab
  1. Validate CPT/HCPCS codes, modifiers, and charge units against clinical documentation of procedures performed and supplies utilized.
  2. Identify and resolve missed, duplicate, or incorrect charges for procedures performed and supplies utilized.
  3. Collaborate with clinical staff to correct charge issues.
  4. Monitor trends and escalate recurring or systemic charge capture concerns
  5. Support education related to documentation and charge capture best practices
  6. Assist with internal/external audits and regulatory reviews as needed
  7. Maintain knowledge of CMS and payer billing requirements for procedural services

Preferred experience:

  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR), preferably Epic
  • Strong knowledge of coding standards (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS Level II) with 2+ years of experience, preferably within Heart & Vascular areas.
  • Certifications Preferred: Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC) and Certified Cardiology Coder (CCC)
  • Familiarity with cardiac device rebate processes.

Professional Experience Requirements:

  • Three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Computer data entry and typing required. Prior experience in customer service desired. Medical terminology required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret documents general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedure. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and present information while responding to questions. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables where limited standardization exists.
