Over the last two years of the Wellcome Leap project, the Department has developed innovative artificial intelligence-based models that predict the risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) using electronic health record data. These models were developed using the All of Us Research Program dataset and externally validated on Veterans Affairs multi-center data. The team is currently validating the models for predicting persistent opioid use and OUD after surgery, as well as identifying potential patients for in-patient addiction consults. The next step is to leverage these models on the tens of millions of patient records available in Epic Cosmos, the largest federated electronic health record database in the United States. The primary objective of this work is to develop tools for implementing precision medicine approaches to OUD, enabling early risk stratification. Precision medicine considers individual factors-including genetics, social environment, lifestyle, and clinical characteristics-rather than relying on any single factor, since no one factor accounts reliably for OUD risk. OUD is a complex neurobiological disorder influenced by genetic, environmental, and physiological factors. Recent advances have highlighted the roles of genomics, data science, microbiome, and metabolome in the onset, progression, and cessation of addictive behaviors. To effectively implement a precision medicine-based approach, it is vital to identify high-risk patients early and incorporate multifaceted data into the analysis. The selected candidate's primary role will focus on data analytics for the Wellcome Leap project. They will assist in leading and teaching the team in project design and data analysis and will also conduct large-scale data analytics using Epic Cosmos for grant-funded research projects, including studies on opioid addiction, perioperative medicine, and intensive care. Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.
