Intern - Intelligent Topology Optimization for Next Generation Bioprocess Design

Sartorius North America
United States, Massachusetts, Marlborough
Feb 18, 2026
Internship: Six months with potential for up to twelve month internship

In this Corporate Research internship, you will contribute to the development of nextgeneration bioprocessing technologies-integrating computational modeling, advanced simulation, and datadriven optimization approaches. The role focuses on applying multiphysics simulation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and algorithmic/MLdriven topology and geometry optimization to accelerate the design of innovative systems such as the next generation of bioreactors, flow kits, mixers, and microfluidic devices.

You will design, execute, and analyze computational studies; develop and refine simulation tools; and support the translation of predictive models into actionable engineering designs. This role involves collaboration with internal Research teams, including fluidics engineering, additive manufacturing, and advanced materials groups, as well as external experts, to advance emerging bioprocessing concepts.

What you will accomplish together with us:
  • Develop and execute multiphysics and CFD simulations to investigate fluid flow, mass transfer, and heat transfer phenomena in bioprocessing systems.
  • Apply topology optimization, geometry optimization, and machine learning-driven algorithms to guide the design of bioreactors, mixers, and microfluidic platforms.
  • Create, implement, and validate custom algorithms for multiobjective optimization problems (e.g., flow uniformity, mixing efficiency, shear minimization).
  • Support prototype design by generating computational insights and communicating design recommendations to fluidics, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, and sensor/optical engineering teams.
  • Develop reducedorder models or surrogate models to accelerate design iteration cycles.
  • Partner with crossfunctional teams-including fluidics, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, and sensor/optical engineering-to integrate simulation outcomes into product concepts.
  • Analyze results, document modeling approaches, and report progress weekly.
  • Engage in literature and technology scouting to identify novel computational methods and bioprocessing innovations relevant to Corporate Research.
What will convince us: Education:
  • Pursuing a M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Experience / Knowledge:
  • Strong understanding of fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer fundamentals.
  • Experience with multiphysics modeling tools (e.g., COMSOL Multiphysics, ANSYS Fluent, MStarCFD, SolidWorks).
  • Experience in developing scripts or codes for simulation automation or optimization (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C++, or similar).
  • Familiarity with machine learning methods, design optimization, numerical methods, or datadriven modeling.
  • Exposure to bioprocessing or lifescience systems (bioreactors, microfluidics, filtration, or mixing technologies) is a plus.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse engineering teams (fluidics, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, optical/sensor engineering, and chemical engineering).

What we value:

  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills; demonstrates robust problemsolving capability.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Strong initiative, intellectual curiosity, and resultsoriented mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying computational findings to audiences with varying technical backgrounds.
  • Experience with documentation and versioncontrol systems (e.g., Git) is a plus.
Working Conditions / Environment
  • Occasional work in laboratory or prototype testing environments.
  • Possible travel (~20%), domestic or international.
  • Work may involve collaborations with external partners or academic research groups.
