Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating.

Essential Functions
-Performs vital signs, weights/heights, intakes and outputs with accuracy and within established time frame and/or as requested.
-Completes all documentation in the medical record as required.
-Interacts with patients and their families effectively.
-Helps patients with a number of basic hygiene tasks.
-This may include bathing and dressing patients, helping them use the toilet if needed and feeding them.
-Assists with helping patients turn and reposition themselves in bed as needed and help them move between the bed and a wheelchair if they use one.
-Listens to any health concerns patients may have and report those concerns to the nurses.

In order to serve the Northeastern University nursing community better, Massachusetts General Hospital provided a list of Clinical units looking to support a Nursing Students Coop.

The duties of Patient Care Associate Trainee (PCA) include:

  • Assisting the healthcare team; the PCA promotes a safe and caring environment for patients under the guidance of an RN.

  • PCA assists patients with daily living needs, monitoring & reading vital signs, drawing blood, and obtaining EKGs.

  • Responds to patient requests in a timely manner, safeguarding patient confidentiality, monitoring patient safety, and always communicating in a respectful manner.

  • Cardiac Arrythmia Step

Must have previous Coop or Clinical experience for all Intensive Care units, which include:

  • Multidisciplinary ICU

  • Neuro ICU

  • Medical ICU

  • Cardiac Surgical ICU

  • Pediatrics ICU

Requirements:

  • CPR: Either American Red Cross or and American Heart Association for Health Care Providers is required. Any other provider of CPR certification will not be accepted.

  • Education Level: Enrolled sophomore to senior nursing students

Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree?
No

Licenses and Credentials
Basic Life Support [BLS] - Generic - HR Only preferred

Experience
Patient Care Experience 0-1 year preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Understands his/her role in relation to providing patient care activities.
- Understands hospital, division and unit policies and procedures and utilizes these in providing care.
- Communicates effectively with the staff and all members of interdisciplinary health care team.
- Communicates effectively with patients/significant others in providing patient care.
