Institution Overview

The University of Oklahoma (OU) and OU Health are seeking a Gastroenterologist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor to join Oklahoma's only comprehensive academic medical center. OU Health delivers advanced, patient-centered care through a multidisciplinary model that integrates clinical excellence, innovative research, and medical education. The Division of Gastroenterology provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders and serves as a referral center for complex cases across the region.

Position Overview

This faculty position offers the opportunity to practice general gastroenterology within a collaborative academic environment. The successful candidate will be focused on providing high-quality outpatient care including a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. While the primary focus is general GI, candidates with a clinical and academic interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) or gastrointestinal motility disorders are strongly encouraged to apply and will be supported in developing or expanding these focus areas within the division.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Services

  • Provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients with general gastrointestinal disorders, including esophageal, gastric, intestinal, pancreatic, and hepatobiliary conditions.

  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures in accordance with evidence-based guidelines and best practices.

  • Participate in outpatient clinics, delivering patient-centered, high-quality care.

  • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary care team including surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, and advanced practice providers.

  • Develop and maintain a focused clinical practice in IBD or motility, if applicable, while supporting the division's general GI mission.

Program Development & Quality Improvement

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of clinical protocols and care pathways within the Division of Gastroenterology.

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes, safety, and care efficiency.

  • Engage in outreach activities to referring physicians and community partners to strengthen regional GI services.

Research & Education

  • Participate in clinical research and scholarly activities consistent with academic rank and professional interests.

  • Teach and mentor medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers, fostering academic excellence and lifelong learning. As the state's premier academic institution, the faculty member will have a major role in training gastroenterology fellows.

  • Remain current with advances in gastroenterology and integrate emerging evidence into clinical practice.

Qualifications

Education & Training

  • MD or DO degree

  • Board certified or board eligible in Gastroenterology

Experience

  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, commensurate with experience and academic accomplishments.

  • Experience in general gastroenterology required; additional expertise or focused interest in IBD or gastrointestinal motility disorders preferred.

  • Prior academic or high-volume clinical experience is desirable; early-career faculty are encouraged to apply.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Position based at OU Health in Oklahoma City within a modern academic medical center.

  • Combination of inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities.

  • On-call responsibilities shared among gastroenterology faculty.

Responsibilities

  • Direct patient care as well as teaching and supervision of residents and fellows, medical students, and other trainees.
  • Will practice in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Qualifications

  • Applicants must have or be able to obtain a Oklahoma medical license prior to employment and be BC/BE in Gastroenterology.
  • Candidates are eligible for faculty appointments through the OU College of Medicine - appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishment and experience.
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon successfully obtaining Board Certification in the eligibility timeframe of your specialty.
