The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for a Research Scientist position. We seek a qualified candidate with expertise in semiconductor device physics to support several research initiatives at the University of Virginia. The candidate should have experience with the design, fabrication, and characterization of optoelectronic devices, with a preference for knowledge of linear-mode and Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes. Preferred candidates should also be familiar with equipment operation and maintenance for photodiode characterization, including current-voltage, capacitance-voltage, quantum efficiency versus wavelength, avalanche gain, and multiplication noise in linear-mode avalanche photodiodes. Characterization of single photon avalanche diodes requires knowledge of dark count rate, photon detection efficiency, and afterpulse rate. Experience in cleanroom processing techniques is also desired. The candidate will be expected to take the lead on programs with minimal oversight and interface with collaborators at other universities. The candidate will also be expected to mentor graduate students in the same area as the candidate. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, or other fields related to optoelectronic device technology. Salary and benefits offered will be commensurate with the candidates' experience and qualifications. APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Apply online at https://uva.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com and attach a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references. Please note that multiple documents can be uploaded in the box. APPLICATION DEADLINE: Review of applications will begin on February 21, 2026, but the position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. Questions regarding this position should be directed to Professor Joe Campbell (jcc7s@virginia.edu). For questions about the application process, please contact Richard Haverstrom, Academic Recruiter, at rkh6j@virginia.edu.
