About the Job:
This is a temporary, 12-month appointment. This is a 100% clinical appointment responsible for providing veterinary care to raptor patients, including both wildlife rehabilitation patients and client-owned captive raptors, at The Raptor Center within the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. The staff veterinarian will work closely with the associate veterinarian and medical director and, following appropriate training, is expected to be able to independently perform the majority of clinical responsibilities without direct supervision.

Responsibilities:
85% - Veterinary clinic work, including, but not limited to:

  • Perform complete admission examinations and triage newly admitted wildlife patients according to TRC's standards of care and institutional ethics
  • Provide timely humane euthanasia as needed
  • Primary case management (medical and surgical) of injured and ill wild raptors to include all medical treatments, soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries, physiotherapy, ophthalmic examinations, and more.
  • Perform pre-release exams
  • Perform general anesthesia and be able to respond appropriately and efficiently to anesthetic emergencies
  • Develop and adjust treatment plans for hospitalized patients, including medications, therapies, diet, and housing
  • Obtain and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Follow and adhere to strict biosecurity and quarantine protocols that may change on a seasonal or as-needed basis
  • Identify patients that may have an infectious disease, and implement treatment and management protocols as needed, including biosecurity and quarantine protocols
  • Obtain research samples and log data accurately
  • Perform annual wellness examinations and medical concern examinations for captive, client-owned raptors, including educational ambassadors and falconry birds

10% - Veterinary teaching and training support

  • Provide hands-on clinical training and mentorship to TRC's veterinary intern(s), the Partners for Wildlife veterinary intern, visiting veterinary students, and other visiting professionals
  • Help cover on-call hours for backup support for the veterinary interns
  • May be asked to provide a few professional lectures per year
  • Assist with remote consultations

5% - Other duties as assigned

Location and Work Environment: 100% in-person at The Gabbert Raptor Center

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week. Flexibility is required with scheduling as the actual work schedule will flex with the season. Work hours will fall between 8AM and 7PM and weekend days may be mid-week during the summer months.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS plus at least 5 years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least 9 years
  • Minimum of 1 year experience working with raptors, including eagles, in a wildlife rehabilitation setting as a veterinarian
  • Ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, including volunteers and the general public
  • Competency in Windows and Microsoft office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in MN, or the ability to obtain licensure by the start date
  • Minimum of 3 years post-graduate clinical experience as a veterinarian
  • Experience in giving verbal presentations to large groups , both in-person and virtually
  • Experience working with/supervising volunteers
  • Experience and enthusiasm for mentoring veterinary and post-graduate students
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills
  • Completion of formal postgraduate clinical training programs
  • USDA accreditation (Category I and II)
About the Department

Established in 1974 as part of the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, The Raptor Center (TRC) rehabilitates over 1000 sick and injured raptors annually while helping to identify and conduct research on emerging environmental issues related to raptor populations and the health of ecosystems. TRC is an internationally renowned education facility that trains veterinary students and veterinarians from around the world to become future leaders in raptor medicine and conservation. In addition, The Raptor Center has a substantial education and outreach program to educate and inspire the public. Through the use of raptor ambassador birds, TRC's education team reaches over 100, 000 people annually through a variety of programming at on and off-site venues and through virtual technology. All of this work is done with the assistance of over 300 volunteers.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $33.65/hr- $38.47/hr depending on education/qualifications/experience
