Medical Director, Trauma - Main Line Health

Lankenau Hospital is seeking an accomplished, visionary Trauma Surgeon to serve as Medical Director of the Main Line Health Trauma Program at our Level II Trauma Center. The Medical Director will partner with executive and clinical leaders, including in a dyad partnership with the Chair of Surgery, to advance excellence in trauma prevention, acute care, research, and education across our hospitals and emergency network. This is a dual administrative and clinical role, offering the opportunity to provide strategic leadership while maintaining an active trauma surgery practice within Main Line Health.

The Medical Director provides clinical and strategic leadership for the growth and development of the trauma program, ensuring quality, innovation, and collaboration across a multi-hospital, community-based academic health system.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Bears responsibility for program direction in collaboration with the Program Coordinator, including development and evaluation.
  • Provides medical direction for the program, including coordination of medical services across specialties and supervision of all services rendered within the Trauma Division.
  • Coordinates with nursing administration to support the nursing needs of the program.
  • Ensures program compliance with all state and local trauma regulations, Joint Commission, Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation, and all applicable hospital and medical staff bylaws, rules, and procedures.
  • Participates first-hand in the treatment of multisystem trauma patients.
  • Maintains trauma expertise clinically and educationally, including required CME.
  • Oversees all clinical performance improvement activities, including participation in multidisciplinary conferences, M&M reviews, trauma registry maintenance, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Participates in trauma research and publication efforts; develops trauma treatment protocols.
  • Works with hospital administration and medical staff to establish uniform credentialing criteria and standards for trauma physicians.
  • Directs and participates in the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training program and maintains ATLS instructor status.
  • Oversees all program-related educational activities for undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, and allied health personnel.
  • Represents the hospital in national, state, and local trauma-related activities and organizations.
  • Participates in and encourages public education efforts concerning the Trauma Program.
  • Submits timely reports concerning the Trauma Program to hospital administration and medical staff as requested.
  • Coordinates the budgeting process for the program in conjunction with hospital administration.
  • Leads the trauma team in the delivery of evidence-based, patient-centered care.
  • Develops, evaluates, and updates trauma care protocols and pathways to ensure compliance with ACS, state, and hospital regulations.
  • Certifies and documents trauma patient eligibility and ensures appropriate triage and transfer processes.
  • Collaborates with trauma program manager, nursing, and ancillary staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Participates in trauma center verification and designation processes.
  • Provides education and training for trauma team members, including physicians, APPs, nurses, and residents.
  • Engages in community outreach and injury prevention initiatives.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates trauma physicians and APPs.
  • Develops strategies to build relationships with referring physicians, EMS, and community partners.
  • Other duties as assigned by hospital or system leadership.
  • Qualifications

  • Board certified by the American Board of Surgery.
  • Added qualification in Surgical Critical Care.
  • Medical Degree (MD/DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in General Surgery.
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care, Trauma or Acute Care Surgery required.
  • Minimum 5 years of clinical experience in trauma surgery.
  • 2+ years of physician leadership or medical director experience preferred.
  • Experience with trauma program administration, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Unrestricted Pennsylvania medical license.
  • ATLS (Advanced Trauma Life Support) Instructor status required.
  • Ongoing continuing education in trauma (16 hours CME annually or 48 hours over three years, with at least 2 hours per year in pediatric trauma).
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Experience with trauma registry, data analytics, and performance improvement.
  • Commitment to education, research, and community outreach.
