Summary: The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) III - Lead / Alternate Program Manager serves as a senior technical, operational, and coordination lead responsible for the inspection, maintenance, calibration, repair, and lifecycle management of medical and non-medical support equipment. This role combines advanced hands-on technical expertise with leadership, scheduling, project coordination, and alternate program management responsibilities to ensure maximum equipment readiness and contract compliance. The BMET III Lead supports the Program Manager in overseeing daily operations, managing maintenance schedules, coordinating personnel and resources, and ensuring all work is performed in accordance with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidance, Department of Defense (DoD) instructions, service-specific policies, and applicable federal and state regulations. The position may exercise operational oversight of other BMET personnel and serve as a subject-matter expert for documentation, compliance, and maintenance management systems.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions: Technical & Maintenance Functions:
- Perform initial inspections, acceptance testing, configuration verification, calibration, diagnostics, and repair of complex medical and non-medical support equipment.
- Execute advanced preventive and corrective maintenance, including component-level and system-level troubleshooting across multiple equipment modalities.
- Maintain, service, and repair non-medical support systems such as generators, environmental control units, oxygen generating systems, radiographic diagnostic equipment, and life support systems.
- Interpret and apply OEM service manuals, schematics, technical bulletins, engineering drawings, and regulatory standards to ensure compliance and safety.
- Conduct complex inspections, electrical safety testing, and pre-operational testing of new, used, or reconditioned equipment.
- Determine repair feasibility, parts requirements, provisioning needs, and training requirements associated with assigned equipment.
Lifecycle & Asset Management:
- Perform lifecycle management activities including condition assessments, performance evaluations, replacement recommendations, and equipment acquisition support.
- Manage equipment inventory, asset reconciliation, and database accuracy within the Maintenance Management Information System (MMIS/CMMS).
- Collect, analyze, and maintain historical maintenance data to support readiness and continuous improvement initiatives.
Leadership, Scheduling & Project Coordination:
- Serve as Alternate Program Manager, assisting the Program Manager with day-to-day operations, project tracking, risk assessments, and performance reporting.
- Lead, mentor, and provide technical guidance to BMET personnel; assign tasks, observe performance, and validate maintenance actions.
- Develop, implement, and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance schedules to optimize workflow and ensure timely completion.
- Coordinate project management activities including equipment installation, system upgrades, lifecycle replacements, and equipment relocation.
- Balance workloads, prioritize maintenance actions, and allocate resources across assigned sites or departments.
Compliance, Documentation & Communication:
- Ensure all maintenance operations comply with OEM guidance, DoD instructions, Joint Commission, FDA, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of all maintenance actions within the MMIS.
- Run reports and review maintenance data to ensure compliance with contractual performance standards.
- Prepare reports, purchase requisitions, and technical documentation for parts, equipment, and services.
- Communicate effectively with leadership, medical staff, vendors, and external stakeholders to maintain transparency and mission alignment.
- Support training programs and ensure technician certifications and competencies are maintained.
- Monitor and validate work performed by external service providers and vendors.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Demonstrated experience in advanced diagnostics, maintenance, lifecycle management, and repair of medical and non-medical equipment.
- Basic knowledge of biomedical equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with electrical and mechanical systems related to medical devices
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical manuals and safety guidelines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a healthcare team
- Effective communication skills to provide technical support and document service activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree desired; may be waived with sufficient qualifying field experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of biomedical maintenance field experience, including at least four years as a Level II BMET.
- Proven experience in personnel coordination, scheduling, and project management.
- Graduate of the DoD Biomedical Maintenance Course or an accredited civilian Biomedical Maintenance Course.
- Completion of the Planmeca digital dental course within 12 months of start date, as required.
- Ability to pass client background screening and security clearance requirements.
- Approximately 10%-25% travel (may increase to 25%-50% based on mission requirements).
Preferred Certifications & Skills:
- Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
- AAMI certification.
- Experience with medical imaging equipment.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and CMMS/MMIS platforms.
