The Pump & Haul Section in the Gravity Sewers Branch of the Wastewater Collection Division (WCD) is seeking a safe and reliable septic pump truck driver to join its professional driving team.
Pump & Haul (P&H) Section of the Gravity Sewers Branch in the Wastewater Collection Division of the Department of Public Works & Environmental Services (DPWES) provides service to Fairfax County homeowners and businesses seven days a week, including holidays, weekends, and County administrative leave days. The coordinated work schedule consists of a rotating five days of work and two days off each week.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Pump sewage from three wet well sites located in Fairfax County and transport it to a wastewater treatment plant or other designated disposal sites within the County.
- Proficiently operate pumps on the truck and at the station sites, safely transport 4000 gallons of effluent in a tank truck, and provide support on emergency job sites.
- Required to keep trucks clean, greased, fueled and to perform daily maintenance checks.
- Other related duties are interacting with the public when assessing sanitary sewer issues, mitigating environmental impacts by responding to overflows, pipe breaks, and grinder calls, and assisting with cleaning operations at pump stations, using laptops and/or desktop computers to create and enter work orders in the asset management system (EAM) or a daily record of loads hauled from various sites, miles driven, and hours worked.
- Duties are performed under the supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor for Trouble Response.

Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. Overtime may be mandated when emergencies occur related to the health, welfare, or safety of either the public or employees..

NOTE: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) as emergency essential personnel staff and is required to report to work during extreme inclement weather and during emergency situations to fulfil emergency services.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Motor Equipment Operator position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; and, two years of experience in the operation of medium/light motorized equipment.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- A valid driver's license.
- A Class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL).
- DOT Medical Card.
- VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Certification (Flagger) within 6 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two years of work experience driving a septic tank truck or other CDL vehicle with a tank.
- One or more years of wastewater management systems.
- Intermediate knowledge of state traffic laws and regulations.
- Basic experience using computer systems related to Microsoft Outlook, GIS, and/or asset management system.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in written form, is crucial for engaging with colleagues and customers through phone calls, or face-to-face meetings. Ability to lift/ slide up to 90 lbs. with assistance. Ability to set up and operate septic pump truck equipment units. Ability to work around and in contact with raw sewage. Must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and use other automated technology to input, access and retrieve information from a laptop or desktop. Visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitors such as GIS maps. Must be able to physically negotiate rough terrain on uneven ground such as hills, wooded and marshy areas to make direct observation of work in progress including recognizing unforeseen hazards such as sharp objects, warning signs, slippery surfaces, steep depressions, tripping hazards. Must be able to push, pull, lift, bend, stoop, walk, climb/crouch, crawl, stand and reach to work in demanding and uncomfortable positions for extended durations. This is necessary to manipulate materials with manual dexterity, utilize hoses, and operate units that are up to 12 feet in height. Additionally, this includes setting up and performing maintenance access in authorized confined spaces, which involves entering and exiting catch basins and manholes. According to safety regulations, individuals who weigh 310 lbs. or more are prohibited from entering confined spaces. Must be able to use all required personal property equipment, including but not limited to hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, hi-vis protective vest and leg gaiters, safety-toed boots, and personal fall arrest harness when working in a confined space. Must be physically fit to perform manual labor in all types of environments. This requires the ability to endure variable and extreme weather conditions such as hot, cold, during rain, noisy environments, etc. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
