This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

This is a unique role, which will span Materials and Process Engineering and focus on aspects of thermal processing, joining/brazing technologies, and coating processes. This role will directly impact design and manufacturability of rocket engine hardware, ultimately contributing to lowering the cost of access to space.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with design, manufacturing and process engineers to design for thermal processing including heat treatment, brazing, and surface/coating processing
  • Work with cross-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware
  • Identify and apply mature state-of-the-art processes to manufacturing, and develop process control documentation and quality assurance measures
  • Develop new processes to solve challenging problems, including joining, coatings and heat treatment
  • Own process and repair qualification across the development and production lifecycle
  • Train operators in all aspects of thermal processing and equipment usage and maintenance

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years' experience of special process support for aerospace hardware with an emphasis on thermal processing, brazing, and/or diffusion coatings.
  • Experience processing aerospace materials including stainless steel, copper, nickel and cobalt alloys, or titanium alloys
  • Experience with post process testing such as hardness, alpha case, metallography and mechanical testing
  • Experience implementing and qualifying production special processes
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and present results in a meaningful format

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HIP (hot-isostatic pressing), HPHT (high pressure heat treat) and/or vacuum compression brazing
  • Experience working with diffusion-based coatings
  • In-depth understanding of materials/ process relationships for the design of custom thermal treatments
  • Knowledge of fixturing strategies to reduce dimensional distortion
  • Experience with auditing special processes and expertise in driving corrective actions.
  • Experience with failure and forensic analysis of aerospace or other complex hardware
  • Understanding of quality standards and industrial codes

  • Required for Certain Job Profiles: Drivers who operate Commercial Motor Vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) or combination of power unit and trailer that meets or exceeds 10,001 lbs. and/or transports placardable amounts of hazardous materials by ground in any vehicle on a public road while in commerce, may be subject to additional Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations including: Driver Qualification Files, Medical Certification (obtained before onboarding), Road Test, Hours of Service, Drug and Alcohol Testing (CDL drivers only), vehicle inspection requirements, CDL requirements (if applicable) and hazardous materials transportation/shipping training.

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
