A Brief Overview The Senior Director of Central Processing Department (CPD) supervises, assigns and directs all activities of personnel performing sterile processing functions. Has authority and responsibility for the operations of Central Sterile Processing Department, including staffing, budgets, customer service and productivity. Provides oversight for all system wide high level disinfection practices. Serves as the subject matter expert in sterilization/high level disinfection, guiding the organization to ensure all processes are compliant with State, Federal, Joint Commission, AAMI, AORN, CDC and CMS laws or/or regulations. Plans, organizes, develops, coordinates, manages, evaluates and directs the daily operation and activities of all sterile processing for the hospital. Maintains quality and regulatory records and provides reports as required. Assures customer satisfaction.
What you will do
- Business Management
- Plans, organizes, develops, coordinates, directs and evaluates the daily ongoing activities of the department.
- Oversees the Surgical picking and preparation process.
- Directs activities related to customer requirements, budget challenges, human resource needs and plans for new business development.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, environmental and infection control standards.
- Establishes Departmental Metrics and Facilitates implementation of process changes which positively impact the sterilization and surgical operations.
- Maintains an environment of continuous improvement with CPD and Surgical Team Leaders.
- Manages business and value implications/analyses for current and prospective technologies and procedural care.
- Ensures Proper Allocations of staffing resources to maximize productivity and budget.
- Coordinates with Supply Chain Management to ensure adequate levels of supplies and to manage current and long-term capital holdings including service contract analytics, capital replacement planning (short and long term planning)
- Proactively identifies operational opportunities and problems related to the clinical, research and academic missions of the department. Works with the staff to develop goals, improve processes and implement change.
- Coordinate with indirect support departments including facilities and environmental services to maintain environmental systems.
- Maintain oversight of @chop community for CPD.
- Has responsibility for high level disinfection and sterilization program across CHOP enterprise
- Collaborates with area-specific leadership to assess HLD/S needs and develops plans of action as needed.
- Works to achieve continual readiness through regulatory control initiatives. Develops systems to facilitate regulatory compliance.
- Develops regulatory expertise in nursing and medical operations teams.
- Works collaboratively with leaders and other key stakeholders to prioritize and plan for infection prevention related education.
- Assures that curricula content is consistent with practice expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Develops systems for focused education for specific departments or phenomenon identified in risk assessments.
- Provides internal expertise, education and advocacy.
- Identifies opportunities for standardization of processes, supplies, and equipment across the CHOP enterprise.
- Leadership
- Creates strategic plan; aligns to CHOP overall plans for growth and capacity.
- Responsible for the development of the department vision and for preparing and implementing departmental goals and objectives to achieve the vision.
- Keeps informed of and communicates to staff current trends in sterile processing activities. Participates in infection, safety and quality control programs. Attends seminars, workshops, etc.
- Develops relationships and partners with surgical services leadership, including surgeons and nurses to understand volumes and clinical requirements.
- Actively involved in establishing common metrics to be used within the department and the ongoing analysis and refinement of these metrics.
- Consults with Vice President of Supply Chain and department managers related to budget requests; establishes the priority of competing requests; recommends the deletion, inclusion or modification of budget requests to practice leadership.
- Develops and enforces policies and guidelines supplier representatives that interact with the department.
- Thorough knowledge of systems: instrument tracking - CPM, Case Cart - EPIC, Supply Chain - Infor, and CHOPs administrative systems: CHOPone, mycareer@chop, timekeeping - Kronos as they relate to the CPD department.
- Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
- Staff Management
- Provides overall direction and coaching to departmental managers and supervisors.
- Manage staff matters including planning adequate staffing for administrative functions, supervising support personnel and interpreting and implementing all CHOP personnel policies.
- Provide line of sight for CPD department vision to all department employees and assures individual goals are aligned.
- Coordinate various administrative functions.
- Manage timely processing of CHOPOne new hire requisitions in consult with Manager.
- Collaborate with Vice President of Supply Chain and department managers to maintain appropriate staffing levels.
- Oversees the development and execution of in-service education programs.
Education Qualifications
- Master's Degree business or healthcare related field - Required
Experience Qualifications
- At least seven (7) years experience working in the sterile processing department - Required and
- At least three (3) years working in cross-functional teams. These teams include internal employees as well as consultants, contractors, and vendors - Required
- At least seven (7) years experience working in the sterile processing department in acute, academic hospital setting - Preferred and
- Experience directly managing the sterile processing department. Experience with a union shop - Preferred and
- Experience healthcare and/or business process reengineering - Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Advanced proficiency with project management and communication tools (e.g., Visio, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word).
- Knowledge of healthcare business processes, and/or knowledge in one or more departmental operation in a healthcare setting. Understands healthcare data, operations and reporting/analytical tools.
- Demonstrates ability to prioritize work, strong organizational skills and initiative to improve processes.
- Change agent demeanor. Must be a flexible thinker, with an ability to quickly adapt to a changing environment.
- Understanding of current project management methodologies.
- A working knowledge of a healthcare from acute, ambulatory, and industry perspectives.
- Team-oriented, self-starting individual.
