About Department 403 - Technical Services
The Life Cycle Support directorate is responsible for the development and maintenance of all submarine logistics products, including modernization and fleet support of submarines. Our mission is to provide the U.S. Navy five-star support that increases submarine Operational Availability and Capability. As part of this directorate, Department 403 - Technical Services provides writing, editing, logistics, and production services in the development and maintenance of logistic technical data (LTD), including ship systems manuals and component technical manuals for OHIO, SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, SSGN, and COLUMBIA.

D403 Technical services currently has an opening for a Technical Writing Editor.

Key Responsibilities

    Edit the content of technical writing products including component manuals, and maintenance and alteration documents.
  • Maintain configuration management of all work related to their products.
  • Plan/coordinate issuance of product liabilities to support ship and construction schedules.
  • Resolve items identified as discrepant directly with engineering, shipyard organizations, and the customer.
  • Determine the technical requirements of the writing product and instruct the writer as to the format and content.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new and experienced writers.
  • Work with supervision to determine priorities, schedule, and work load to plan and coordinate the work of the group.
  • Review and edit interactive electronic technical manuals.
  • Ensure that the products are prepared in accordance with published procedures and processes.
  • As directed, attend various meetings representing D403 supervision.
  • Recommend and implement process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure quality of products.
  • Act as a lead editor for department XML conversion efforts, especially pertaining to component technical manuals.


Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 4+ years technical writing experience
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Secret clearance through the DoD

Preferred

  • Bachelors degree
  • Prior Military experience
  • A technical background in submarine systems and components
  • Experience with SGML to XML conversion


Skills

  • Proven leadership and mentorship skills

  • Good communication with the ability to plan, organize, and schedule work
  • Proven success directing others to accomplish tasks on time
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office)
