DEPUTY SHERIFF CAPTAIN

Under the general direction of the Sheriff, serves as the Captain of Communications and Administrative Divisions.
Must possess the following qualifications at the time of application:
*A Bachelor's Degree in police science, criminal justice, or related field and eight years of sworn supervisory law enforcement experience or the classification of a Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
*Must maintain residence within Washington County or its six contiguous counties (Dodge, Fond du Lac, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Sheboygan or Waukesha).
*Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license.

Annual Pay Range (Salaried): $107,740.60 - $143,264.10

Duties/Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

*Coordinates and supervises the requirements of the Communications and Administrative Divisions.
*Assists with preparation of the department budget for the Communications and Administrative Divisions.
*Estimates and establishes revenue accounts for services provided.
*Maintains discipline and morale among other supervisory personnel within the Communications and Administrative Divisions.
*Insures appropriate staffing on each shift. Approves time cards of communications and administrative personnel.
*Coordinates and approves training in the Communications and Administrative Divisions.
*Conducts performance evaluations of administrative staff and supervisory staff in the Communications Division.
*Insures that duties are performed in an effective and efficient manner.
*Monitors monthly reports and reviews statistics.
*Investigates citizens' complaints, and takes appropriate action.
*Supervises the writing of grants within the Communications and Administrative Divisions.
*Reviews purchase orders.
*Serves as liaison between the Sheriff's Office and other users of the Countywide Radio System concerning communications problems.
*Supervises the daily maintenance of the Countywide Radio System and other radio projects.
*Prepares long range plans for maintaining and upgrading the Countywide Radio System.
*Coordinates long range planning for the Washington County E911 System and Communications Center.
*Supervises the Quality Assurance Program within the Communications Division.
*Develops and implements long range planning for technology by working with IS contractors and/or County IS.
*Performs other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.

Work Direction Received:

Works under the general direction of the Sheriff.

Supervision Exercised:

Supervision is given to Communications Supervisors, Administrative Staff, Communications Officers, and other personnel indirectly. The incumbent makes final recommendations concerning hiring, firing, and discipline. The incumbent makes final decisions concerning performance evaluation and assignment of employees.

Decision Making:

Decisions concerning staff utilization, preparing grants, authorizing expenditures, and daily operations of the department are made independently.

Interaction:

There is significant interaction with other law enforcement agencies, County departments, the District Attorney's Office, the court system, private vendors/contractors and the general public.

Essential Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of laws of the State of Wisconsin, methods and practices employed in crime prevention, effective public safety communication system use, and supervisory principles. Ability to supervise a staff, oversee projects, coordinate long range planning, communicate effectively orally and in writing, and interact effectively with co workers and the general public. Able to fulfill physical demands of job, sensory demands (seeing and hearing), and cognitive demands (concentration, conceptualization, memorization).

Training and Experience:
