About us

National Grid's New York business unit owns and operates electricity transmission and distribution networks across upstate New York, and owns and operates gas distribution networks in New York City and on Long Island. We deliver electricity and natural gas to over 4 million customers, and have around 10k employees.

We are looking for a senior engineering leader within the NY Gas business, to be responsible for all gas asset management and engineering within the New York jurisdiction.

Job Purpose

The person in post will develop comprehensive gas asset and system engineering policies and strategies, including contributing to the investment and maintenance plan to ensure the safety, reliability, and growth of the network. This position also provides executive leadership to ensure the business leads the way in the de-carbonization of gas, investing in a range of solutions like renewable natural gas, geothermal, and blending hydrogen in our network.

The role holds a capital budget of $1.5bn, and leads an engineering team of over 400 employees, with seven direct reports.

Key Accountabilities
  • Accountable for optimizing the gas asset over the whole lifecycle through the delivery of all policies, procedures, and work plans, including developing asset replacement strategies, gas engineering standards, safety compliance procedures, and work plan recommendations
  • Responsible for project and engineering design and implementation with innovative engineering solutions for efficient field operations
  • Define and implement the frameworks, policies, procedures, and controls necessary to drive an efficient and effective approach to project development and design that optimizes the delivery of engineering design and management of assets
  • Maintain and evolve asset policy to ensure gas engineering standards achieve compliance and safety ambitions
  • Lead by example in driving change, creating context for others; clearly communicate the business reasons for change at all levels of the organization
  • Inspire and deliver new ways of working collaboratively within the business; driving efficiency and performance excellence as well as matrix working with and through functions and processes to ensure maximum value and achievement of long- term challenges
Candidate Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and Professional Engineer license are required
  • Extensive engineering, asset management, and change management experience, particular in areas such as gas transmission systems, LNG systems, large storage tanks and systems
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance in gas engineering system performance
  • Strong regulatory stakeholder management experience
  • Knowledge of engineering design and regulatory incentives
  • A collaborative leader able to drive change and quickly build trust and credibility
  • Advanced degree in engineering or MBA preferred
