About the role

In this role,you willbe responsible forbuilding and leading a world-class engineering team that drives the technologyenablingan end-to-endStop Loss solution. The Director of Engineering is tasked with setting priorities, leading the team, and successfully implementing the technology that brings value. Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering for Technology and Operations Benefits Division, you will have a significant impact on our strategic direction and growth.

WhatYou willDo



  • Build and lead an inclusive, collaborative engineering team aligned with Symetra's values and DEI commitments.


  • Define technical strategy and partner with stakeholders to deliver end-to-end business solutions.

  • Coach, mentor, and develop engineering talent; recruit andretaintop performers.


  • Drive large-scale initiatives delivering modern, AI-enabled products and experiences.


  • Ensure secure, scalable, and high-performing solutions are delivered on time.


  • Manage vendor relationships andleadtransitions to new services.


  • Reduce technical debt and operational risk while championing user-focused design.


  • Support production releases and off-hoursavailability for critical systems.
  • Contribute to departmental strategy and continuous improvement.

Compensation

SalaryRange: $166,400 - $277,400plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who You Are



  • Bachelor's or master's in computer science or related field


  • 8+ years leading large, cross-functional engineering teams in a remote-first environment.


  • Strong background in software engineering, AI, and solutions architecture.


  • Hands-on experience with AWS, microservices, serverless, and distributed systems.


  • Advocate for CI/CD and modern engineering practices.


  • Skilled in data management, systems design, and agile methodologies.


  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.


  • Ability to balance long-term technology investments with short-term business needs.


  • Passion for building shared services and solving complex integration challenges.


  • Comfortable in fast-paced, high-visibility environments with ambiguity.


  • Some travelrequired.
